Looks like Florida economy is the worse in the nation as far as job losses go. The economy is worsening and probably wont get better for some time. This is the price you pay for having a non diverse economy. Broward unemployment 5.1 percent and miami 5.2 things are going to get ugly

By historic standards those are some of the lowest numbers for Dade and Broward. It's borderline ridiculous that unemployment fell as low as the high 2% range at one point. That was just too low considering the lack of economic diversity, a lot of boom/bust fluff jobs like construction and some unnecessary services were filling in that gap. I think 5% is a natural number for this area. While I agree with you overall and there is generally nothing to dispute, I just challenge that statement because I have to challenge something .

I disagree. To have such a boom like we had, you HAVE to have a bust.

for someone to take fault with anything said here is for someone to expose their lack of understanding when it comes to economics and in particular Florida's economy.

Im enjoying the economic struggle going on these days. I hope its a wake up call to the people who were living way beyond there means and buying houses and cars they cant afford. Im enjoying every second of this from Starbucks closing stores to gas prices being high and foreclosures every where you look. Again I hope its a wake up call to people in that there is more to life then spending $6 for a cup of joe at Starbucks, buying the biggest house in the best neighborhood knowing you cant really afford it, buying fancy cars just to show off and say you have them. To those I say be real. Live simple. Buy and live what and where you can afford. Its also great not seeing all those SUV/Tanks clogging up the roads anymore.

Im gonna use Mcdonalds slogan.

"Im Lovin It"

Now hopefully we can all start moving forward with switching to new ways to run our cars instead of gas.

At the risk of sounding like an old fart telling "When I was your age, I walked 5 miles to school in the snow" stories, I'm reminded by this thread that the unemployment rate reached 22 percent when I lived in the Quad-Cities on the Illinois/Iowa border back in the early '80s. Now THAT was ugly. It was basically a Rust Belt metropolitan area with one industry (farm machinery, which wasn't selling because of interest rates in the high teens) and Deere & Co., International Harvester, etc., were laying people off in droves (causing a ripple effect througout the entire local economy). I don't ever see it getting that bad here, and I hope it doesn't for the sake of all of us -- but can it be counted out? Probably not.

If it can burst the real estate bubble and lower property values, it will be worth it. Florida needs to lead the nation in renewable energy, agriculture and high-tech, and that was impossible with everything going into filling the state with overpriced developments that raise property taxes to unsustainable levels. Unless the real estate prices fall to sustainable levels, Florida has no future.

I don't know what school of economics you went to, but that is entirely not true. There are many cities that have booms and don't bust. They may plateau out at times, but nothing like we are seeing here. Home appraisers are now allowed to go back only 3 months for comps when selling a home because the prices are dropping so fast, pulling comps from more that 3 months would make your appraisal too high and cause future problems with mortgage lending. Properly run cities and states never have to have a bust.

Going to get ugly? Can it get any more uglier down here? I am compelled to reply to this statement. The crime is already ubearable down here. I don't even watch the news anymore, because if I did, I'd be afraid to leave my house to go buy groceries, at least without my concealed weapon, which I strongly advise anybody moving, or already living down here to apply for. You might as well be armed if all the thugs living down here are armed or brazen enough to attack you at the mall or while pumping gasoline.
