white flight
seems our white American neighbors are leading the charge toward the exit signs here in Broward.
Interesting times indeed

Wild - I saw this on the news. I think some families moved up to PBC - even people who lived in Weston, Parkland, and Coral Springs. I think they moved up to the newer PBC communities for schools and (relatively) better prices. Also, it would be interesting to see the statistics on the age group leaving within that population.

That would be interesting indeed. Well, population has been on the decline in Broward for awhile now so this isn't a shocking. Its good too, this place had way more people than it could really sustain.

Two co-workers just got laid off from work here. I wonder how many of the elderly citizens are no longer here, also. I drive past two large senior complexes in Deerfield and Pompano each day to work. They look empty even in the winter! I don't think the next generation of seniors will be moving to Broward County - unless, it's out by Weston or at that new complex near Sawgrass Mills. I think there will be more growth in northern PBC.

Sad to see no news is good news in South Florida lately. It went up too fast. Greedy politicians, developers, flippers, shaky mortgage practices (that's all over), high taxes, high insurance rates, to name a few things. Im hoping for the sake of those who want to stay, things work themselves out. This real estate bubble was bound to burst. White flight is nothing new. It happened in Miami already...It would eventually spread north. I just did not think it would happen this fast.

The thing is, I don't know if any kind of exodus is really bad news for this area. Like you said, it grew way too fast. Definitely not going to be good for the tax base though...

i saw a piece in NYTs that said a lot of elderly are remaining up north with their kids or moving back with their kids.

thats already starting to cause some issues. Did you see the piece about how new teachers coming out of school are having problems finding jobs? If population declines keep up, because of less kids in school and not enough money for funding you will see teachers get laid off.

We vacationed there a few years back and thought it was a pretty rough area. We drove to places like Butterfly World, but spent little time away from the condo area. The final blow for us was when we went to a service station and they demanded the money before we filled up our car. They were inside a locked area??!! We just drove on to another service station. It is a little impossible to know exactly how much it is going to cost to fill up your car and who wants to stop several times and almost fill it.

May I ask where you stayed? I believe you but did you happen to stay in an area called Palm Aire or Pompano Beach? It's a popular resort enclave surrounded by the absolute worst side of town, and I have talked to tourists from the Vacation Village out here where I live who told me they stayed around there and had similar experiences. Also, clerks in gas stations in most urban areas do tend to be behind locked glass to prevent robberies.
