South Florida state mental hospital, still around?
Sometime in the 90's it was privatized to Wackenhut. This was a place that looked like it did in the 50's when it was a dumping ground for the crazies that today are either in jail or on the street. Does anyone know if it still exists or has been replaced with luxury condos? A friend of our family actually worked there in the 80's and I remember it was located somewhere between ft lauderdale and the hollywood speedway out in the boondocks. I just wonder it it still exists to this day.

Still there - and business is good. Privatized and now managed by GEO Care, under contract with the state. Brand new buildings (1998) and 300+ patients, who get very good care. The boondocks are gone now, as that part of Pembroke Pines is crowded. Hospital sits accross the street from Perry airport.

And next to it is a private university. Head north to Pines and make a right on Pines....go down a few blocks and across from the airport on the North Side of Pines lies Las Totoritas...home of the best Ceviche and Peruvian food in broward county

NO, NO, NO Sir..... The best Peruvian food around is at a restaurant on the North East corner of Pines and University called Nazca. Owned and run by a Peruvian and they are not related to my wife.

I was doing some research on real estate in Pembroke Pines when I took note of a South Florid State Hospital on the map. A month or so ago I was searching for predators on the Internet and found that a few of the predators had a common address, so I thought perhaps there is a halfway house in the neighborhood..fast foward to now...I am came across the South Florida State hospital can anyone confirm the address? My gut tells me that these guys wind up here at the Hospital...wow....what a find. Pembroke Pines was noted as one of the best places to raise kids. I really want Pembroke PInes, but with this information I might be changing my direction. Enough crazies in New York.

This has nothing to do with predators, but I personally do not agree that Pembroke Pines is the best place to raise kids. In fact, I'd say Weston wins in this department because of quality of schools.

I didn't realize that the hospital was still around. I thought it was technically closed and then it was turn into a subsidized condo of sorts.
My mom worked there in the early 90s. She mostly liked the people she worked with but hated it overall. However, she had a long employment history with the state and needed to transfer to something closer to home (Cooper City at the time).
I had to accompany her to the office sometimes. It totally creeped me out to go.

Research
I am looking for anyone who worked or knows someone who has worked in the old hospital at south florida state. I have a research project that i am doing and need information. for some reason there is not much posted about the hospital itself. i did hear that some pretty horrible things went on there and would like information. everything will be kept confidential and no ref will be made to where the information came from.
