Why goose decoys?
I'm new to the canal scene. Two of my neighbors have goose decoys floating in the canal behind their homes about two/three feet off the shore. We do have a wide varray of real ducks, heron and turtles in the canal (i've been told they haven't seen an alligator since the development went in four years ago). So whats with the decoys or fake geeze. Are they there to deter something (like alligators) or to attract other ducks? why????
Any ideas? I guess I could be the new dumb neighbor and knock on their door and ask.

Well, we live on a canal, and have a float out on it (not a goose, altho someday I'd like to replace it with a goose because I think they're cute), and it's there because it has something to do with the irrigation (our nursery sprinklers are fed from water in the canal)....I think it may be just a visual for anyone looking for the pipe (the filter gets clogged with algae every so often and has to be scrubbed).

They are sprinker pump feed pipe decorations. If you closely, you'll see they are attached to a pipe coming out of the side of canal leading back to the homes.

yup...they are simply sprinkler pump feed decorations...that is all. Some houses don't use one....so you can see the filter about 2-3 feet from the top of the water.

A good friend of ours lives on a canal in northern Fort Lauderdale and one of his neighbors has those decoys. They're quite realistic-looking from a distance. Never knew they were there to alert people to the presence of pipes.
Going off on a tangent, this thread reminded me that another friend is an agent for Aflac and must have 100 replicas of the Aflac duck around his place (no live ducks, fortunately). I'm sure if he lived on the waterfront, he'd have a duck decoy out there, too.
