Nova Southeastern University
I've been accepted into the dental school and was wondering how the area is. Is it relatively safe, nightlife, outdoor activities (I know there's the beach but what activities are available). I live in Atlanta, so I have no clue what living on the coast would be like. Any input is appreciated.

You would want to live on the coast. Nova is not on the coast, it is 20 minutes to 40 minutes away, depending on traffic. Life occurs in Fort Lauderdale and the other towns on the coast and that would be advisable, since you do not mention young children and the need for family oriented neighborhoods (which are plentiful on the coast line as well anyway.) The commute to Nova from the coast, though, can be tiring, so it is really a trade off of pros and cons.
As for activities, sailing and scuba diving come to mind, any beach related recreational activity, many health clubs, night clubs, canoeing, shopping (care for it?)

Broward County Parks have a lot to offer. Broward County - Parks and Recreation Division and Broward County - Parks and Recreation Division

During hurricane season, the beach areas are the first to evacuate. I would suggest renting inland near the university - your options are: Plantation, Davie, Weston, Sunrise, Cooper City.
Good luck!! My husband and I both graduated from Nova Southeastern, he has a Ph.D. and I have a MBA.

It will take 15 minutes to get from Nova to the beach without any traffic. Half an hour with traffic. I live in Weston and I can be at the beach in half an hour. Weston is much further west than the Nova campus.
The neighborhood near Nova is not that great. It's not unsafe, but it's ugly. It is convenient to live there as a student. It is close to the campus and University Dr. will have every retail store you could possibly need nearby. It is close the Broward Mall.
It is also in the flight path of FLL so if hearing the planes overhead will be annoying look to live away from the campus.
You will need a car in Broward County.
I hope I covered it all. Feel free to ask me any questions that come up. I have lived in Broward for eight years.
