You know things are messed up in Florida when the natives there consider $10 an hour "good money."

Seriously...I was going to go back to my old job as an Investigative Accountant at the State Attorney's Office after an 8 year hiatus to be a stay-at-home Mom - the Chief of Economic Crimes lobbied to get my old position opened again sucessfully....I had worked there for 11 years when I left in 2000. I was making $46K then (having started out at 30K in 1989). I had stellar performance reviews from supervisor (all 5's!), commendation letters from Janet Reno, Bill Nelson, etc, etc. the whole shebang. So, I figure well, it has been 8 years, throw in a little COLA, and I asked for what I thought was a reasonable amount - $50k (after all it is a state job). They offered me $36K with ~maybe 10% more. I stuck with the 50k, figuring I'd settle on $46K. No go. Human Resources calls me CHRISTMAS EVE to tell me I don't have the job, I'm asking for too much. I said "thats really too bad - I really loved working there"...end of story

My wife is a professional with a graduate degree in her field. She was laid off last summer, and after more than six months of searching, she was finally offered a higher level position in the same industry with more responsibility, half the vacation and 1/3 less pay than in her previous job. The sad truth is that in this depressed economy (yes I said it too), the ever growing surpluss of highly skilled unemployed workers will have an even more pronounced downward push on wages.
This is not a good time to move to Miami (or anywhere for that matter) unless you have a job lined up with 100% certainty.

I would not consider moving to any part of South Fla to be honest unless you are lucky enough to some how find a job before you come here.
I am looking to leave Fla. The cost of living is high vs the pay rates in Fla.
With the amount of people in South Fla there is so many people going for 1 job.
I would reconsider at this time

goodness - this is not encouraging at all - - I really am mentally ready to make the move and would hate to completely re-think it. People do make it there? I hope that our president elect can turn things around for the better. Good luck to all those looking for that job. I currently live in NY and am desperately trying to get out of here, but I, like everyone on this thread am petrified about the job situation.

Take it from me, and only go if you have a job or enough money saved up to last the time it takes to get a job. To go down to South Florida without a job would be a mistake right now. I hope this helps.

Ok - So u guys have convinced me not to move right now.
I was thinking about a move this year, but given the current times, I decided to hold off. If I did move I would of been able to keep one my IT contracts that will pay $110K a year and work from home. I could sell my current house, buy down, pay cash and not have a mortgage. However, I only see that job lasting for maybe a year or two. And I know for sure I won't be able to get another there paying that much. The most I would be able to earn there currently is close to 80k and that's pushing it. Wifey would have to go back to work and she wouldn't be a happy camper as she hasn't worked in over 10 years. And I for sure would have to give up my toys (sports cars). I do have friends in the same field that have move to Orlando and work from home, still keeping the NE jobs and salaries. I'm not willing to take that risk yet. So for the meantime I'll continue to visit.
