I applied for a job today, one I was perfectly and uniquely qualified for (it would be a continuation of my dissertation). . . five years ago it would have been mine. I could feel it. I interview well. The woman doing the interviews was great, she told me flat out that her shortlist was a dream list with more experience and comparable education - and that I was not going to be on it, even though she could tell it really would be a great fit, me and the company.

There's competition out there. I have a job that will pay about 35% of my expenses this year and I am the head of a household, the only adult. My savings will be gone soon but my responsibilities will still be around. I am thinking to become a stage mother. I always abhorred it in others, but I can see how it is now.

I totally can relate. I also interview well - I used to say I had never interviewed for a job that wasn't offered to me. Well, times have done changed. It's really bad out there and my heart goes out to you. I sometimes think south Florida is the problem and I wouldnt have this kind of trouble in NY & LA, but now maybe there as well....perhaps Texas or DC?

Its a challenging time nationwide, but South Florida is particularly hard hit. I think its because of its lack of true industry or long established companies. What has occured was that just like the housing market, the jobs that were there were built on dubious foundations that really could not weather the economic adversity of the past few years. That being said - I got a great job in a great city in the midwest - brutal winters though!

I came here from NY in February of 2007. After just a few interviews, got several job offers (in the field of marketing, advertising, sponsorship - over 55K). However I passed on those jobs since I had a newborn baby. Now I am seriously looking and am unable to even land an interview, let alone find anything other then telemarketing or commission-based sales opportunities...

With the amount of people in South Fla there is so many people going for 1 job.

I would reconsider at this time

This is very true. Me and a buddy of mine were talking about this a few days ago.

As much as I love Florida, I don't know of any other state where the cost of living is ever increasing yet the wages remain the same.

This is why many are living paycheck to paycheck down here.
