A lot of folks making correct points, but talking past one another, unfortunately. I have spent 10+ years in both places and maintain homes in both places. When did you last live here Wild Style?
Nothing is "free". Sales tax in NYC is 8.75% vs 6% in Florida, property taxes are higher, there is a state AND city income tax, food costs much, much more (for those that complain about Publix, lol), and if you like to drink or smoke cigarettes (heaven forbid) you can multiply that expenditure by 2-3x.
And to say that a middle class person has a better standard of living in NYC is absurd.
I would love to see photos of that 1,000 dollar a month apartment. I'd rather get a sentence in the jail in downtown Ft Laud.

Food cost much more in NYC? You are on some other stuff right now. I was in NYC in July of 2008. Milk was cheaper in NYC than in Florida and people were complaining because the week I was there milk had gone up by something like 20 cents and it was still cheaper than Florida. I went to the grocery store a hour after i got to new york. Purchased some chicken hot dog, peanut butter and jelly, bread, juice and oats. All the SAME price as in Florida so not sure where you are getting these figures from.
Either way none of this has anything to do with what we were discussing. We were discussing things to do. In Brooklyn when I was there last, there was a outdoor event for the kids in Bed Stuy being hosted by Hot 97. There was a kite in the park event at prospect park. There were at least a dozen other events going on that weekend as well. All outside, and all were for free. Now you compare that to whats going on in Fort Lauderdale, no comparison. Just look in the Miami section about Farmers Markets in Miami/Broward. They are scrapping bottom to come up with five spots. There are a little less than a dozen in Brooklyn alone. That isn't including the other boroughs. I can go on and on and on about what there is to do in comparison to Florida. As for taxes as has been said before you get paid more. Now I am not sure where you are "maintaining" these houses at, but it doesn't seem to be in NYC because your knowledge of something as simple as food cost seems to be way off.
As for your statement about the 1,000 dollar apartment, again silly. I am from Brooklyn, born and raised. You can find TONS of apartments in Brownstons people are renting floors out. Is it park slope? No, but its in bed stuy, flatbush and other areas. Not bad, not unsafe, just working lower and and middle class people. Don't be so quick to judge things you have no first hand knowledge of.

You are right one only one thing, we are off topic. Let's take this to a new thread and let the original topic discussion progress.
Hi, my name is Emily and my family recently moved to FL and I will be moving down shortly. I have been coming to FL frequently since May because my boyfriend lives in Fort Lauderdale and I find a lot of posts on this forum fairly surprising.
I read the “why do you hate it here” thread in addition to several other disparaging threads, and I think people really need to move if they hate FL so much. I’m thinking you will quickly find that things really aren’t so bad in your little slice of paradise.
I live by/work in DC so spare me the traffic argument.
Crime…DC is always in the top five in the “murder capitol of the country” list (darn that Baltimore, always beating us out) so that is pretty silly argument from my perspective as well. Fort Lauderdale doesn’t even make the crime list at all. (United States cities by crime rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) (Violent Crime - Crime in the United States 2007 (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2007/offenses/violent_crime/index.html - broken link)) Not to mention that one of the most dangerous gangs in the country (MS13) is taking over Northern Virginia. (MS13 Gang)
The rude people thing…well I was actually commenting about how much friendlier people were down there when I was down for two weeks over Christmas/New Year’s. When I went shopping at Publix, all the employees (and a few shoppers) actually said “good morning” That would never ever happen here…ever. Believing people are rude is a subjective kind of thing, so it will be difficult to change anyone’s opinion on this.
The gripe I’ve seen on here that I hate the most is the “it’s boring and there is nothing to do here.” I truly believe if you are bored in South FL it’s because you CHOOSE to be bored and you would be unhappy anywhere. South Florida has something for EVERYONE!!
Sports fans = The Dolphins, the Marlins, Miami Heat, plus all the college teams in the area…and the best part is you don’t have to freeze your bits and pieces off just to watch a football game. I’ve been to three Dolphins games this year, including the Playoff game against the Ravens (stupid Ravens!! ) and had a great time at all three!
Travelers = Well other than the fact that you LIVE in an area that many people travel TO. You have instant access to super cheap cruises and the Caribbean, plus the same opportunity to travel anywhere in the world (no different that the rest of the country which is apparently so much better than FL) via one of the several airports in the area.
Active people = Soccer leagues, football leagues, basketball leagues, baseball leagues, swimming, golf, and cycling PLUS you have a ton of activities that most of the country can’t do like ocean kayaking, scuba diving, parasailing, beach volleyball, fishing, boating and sailing. Heck there are even ice rinks so you can play hockey! I’m very sorry you can’t ski and mountain climb in Florida…yup that means there is nothing to do in FL and it’s really boring.
Entertainment = Same as the rest of the country - movie theaters, stand up comedy (Florida Stand-Up Comedy Guide), concerts (American Airlines Arena), the Theater (The Broward Center for Performing Arts: Welcome) (Miami Theater & Arts Guide (http://www.miamiandbeaches.com/visitors/arts_culture_theatre.asp - broken link)), outdoor events year round (festivals, art shows, gardening, bbqs, etc), and TONS of restaurants all around South Florida.
So to the people that claim Florida is oh so boring…please enlighten me. What exactly do you find so entertaining that you can’t do in South FL??
*Donning flame suit* Go ahead and flame away.
Ok..... you're not living here yet..... thats why
SO After you've been here, lets say 5 years......
And after you've done the beach, done the diving, gone fishing, owned a boat and wish you never had one, been to metro zoo and know the animals by name, driven up to Orlando to do the parks and know the turnpike like your back yard, been on cruises, spent your money in south beach, driven on the palmetto expressway at rush hour 5 days a week, the grove is just another city, been through a category 4 hurricane with no electricity for a week in 90 plus degree heat, put up with the 5th ranked most obnoxious drivers in the country, spent too much at the casino's or horse racing, been to the museums and know enough that you could be the guide for each. Oh and did I mention visiting the Keys and know what you will find at each mile marker on your way down to walk on Duval street.

Then LETS TALK about it
AND yes Florida is Boring
OMG...this is so right on. I've been here since '88 and haven't been north of Tallahassee more than maybe 3 times over the last 21 years. I think I may be quietly going insane...

Spot on. And I thought they were ranked 1st in the nation for like 6-7 years in a row, talking about obnoxious drivers that is.
Places like Riverdale and Whitestone are still very small enclaves where a 2,000 square foot home on a zero lot line might run for about 800k. You aren't getting a 3 bedroom for 1500 a month in those communities.
So true. My sister just rented a 4th floor walk-up 1 bedroom in Marble Hill (NOT quite Riverdale) for $825. Go figure.
Curious to everyone that says FL is boring, what did you do that wasn't before you got here?
There is always things to do if you look.
I had to put my two cents in. I am a Jersey Girl that moved to Florida and I also think its sooo boring. After thinking long and hard, here is what I came up with. If your originally from Florida you don't know any other way of life. Its your "home" and you have friends here and know your surroundings. I came to realize that its not the amount of acitivities out there its being able to go to a place that you'll run into familiar faces. Kinda like the bar "cheers". I have gone to many of the activities here and don't know a sole, it was boring. When I would go to them at home I would always run into someone I knew. Just being able to drop by a friends house anytime is something to do. In my opinion close friends make a place home and not boring and if you move to a state where you don't have them your really going to be bored out of your mind and spend lots of money just to keep yourself occupied.
