Has anyone ever taken or known someone who has taken a day cruise to the Bahamas from Ft. Lauderdale? I was checking out the Discovery Cruise line and the price is too good to be true. Is it a dump?

We were going to take this, but I decided not to at the last minute..My research indicated it is basic transportation..nothing fancy.. A lot of locals use this to come to USA and back. They have a website and there is a video on youtube i saw that showed a persons trip.

I met some ladies from Canada that do this every Feb. when they stay in FLL. They love it. They say it includes breakfast on the way there, dinner on the way back, a casino and stuff to do on board. It's only an 80 mile trip each way, that's why it's cheap.

I took a Discovery cruise to Freeport about 8 years ago...(so things may have changed)...it was a great price and included two nights hotel at the "xanadu" resort. I called the company and demanded to go back to beautiful Ft. Lauderdale the next day. The so called resort was a creepy dump in the middle of nowhere..(mattresses stuffed at the end of halls...totally rundown)...from the the hotel, to the people of Freeport in the town and on the beach: it was one big shakedown for our money...taking money for a lounge chair then having his partner try to charge us again...try lying on a beach and having one woman try to put a bracelet on your hand and another start trying to braid your hair (while you are simply trying to catch a tan...they are like flies)...you can't make eye contact with anyone or else your wiggling your way out of another scam. I'm a street wise city person but I didn't feel particularly safe...again an islander approached us a night asking if we needed anything...we tried to blow him off by saying we were waiting for a cab...of course suddenly he's a cab driver and is literally trying to usher us into his unmarked car. Freeport stinks.

The cruise itself is unmemorable...dark casino..big crowded buffet...the pool was filled with cold ocean water upon departure so forget swimming...I was glad to get off the thing.

I said to myself "why did I leave beautiful Florida for this"?...so I cut my losses and left.

I'm not too picky...usually when I read tripadvisor reviews I think people can be a bit uptight...but unless things have dramatically changed, I'd find something else to do to add some punch to your trip.

Default Added thought...

I am going to Ft. Lauderdale in few weeks and I am going to try the day trip to South Beach Miami $35 water taxi to either the beach or shopping roundtrip...it doesn't sound as exotic but it may be a better experience...

Anyone out there done that or have some good alternatives?

I think a 3 day cruise is a better option but you might not have enough time. I took a one day cruise a long time ago that went to Grand Bahama (I think that's what is called) but I found it really boring. We didn't get a room to rest and there is not much to see in Grand Bahama. When I took a 4 day cruise to Nassau, that was really worth every penny.

My boss took some kind of cheap two-day cruise from FTL recently. I'm not sure if it was Discovery Cruise Line (I see their billboard everyday on the way to work and always thought it was too good to be true myself), but he said he had a fantastic time.
