theres nothing wrong with wanting to be around people of my own culture who want me there as well. unlike many people here who are not of my culture who dont want me here.
i like 3rd generation cubans. many of them are VERY friendly. honestly no one there in california knows what goes on down here and until that one guy said it was a third world country no one paid any attention to the problem. i looked up all sorts of information but didnt come across this board until i had already moved here. no one here was helpful or told me where to live. for 6 months i gave everyone the benefit of the doubt until i realized i wasnt meeting people who were exceptions to the rule all the time. |

Do you know any nice areas around Ft Lauderdale?.
You guys are funny, I agree it's hard to deal with us latinos, we are very different. But a lot of us are well educated and have come to the US in different circumstances, I came to get a masters degree at Boston University with my husband, so I can say we are in a way "well educated". I have to admit I want to live in a place where my kids can get a good education, does anyone knows neighborhoods? Everyone says the more "east" the better, I mean the closer to the ocean, is this true? |

Broward County (Fort Lauderdale area) is much better than Miami in my opinion.. I lived in Miami for exactly as long as it took me to find a place in Broward county. Miami is fun to visit... but I realized its not a lpace you want to live (unless you are rich). I live in Sunrise. I'm still close enough so anytime I want to "visit" Miami I can, but away from all the madness for a safe place to raise my kids. You will find alot more family oriented area in Broawrd, especially the further you go west. Many parks and nicer neigborhoods and some of the best schools in South Florida.

It's actually better the more "West" you go. The closer you are to the beach, the more crime there is. I would suggest Weston or Coral Springs. They're both very clean and low crime cities. I live in Coral Springs and I have two young kids and I think it's a perfect place to raise a family. |

Out of the three major South Florida cities (Miami, West Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale) Ford Lauderdale is actually the safest. Of course not all of Fort Lauderdale is nice. There are some high crime areas, but compared to Miami and West Palm Beach is isn't nearly as bad. Personally it's a bit different than Miami. There is a largest white population in Fort Lauderdale, compared to Miami (11%) and West Palm Beach (30%), so knowing Spanish is not as much as a necessity as in those two cities. Fort Lauderdale also isn't as exciting as its bigger brother to the south. But a lot of people prefer it that way anyway.

JoeNJ - I live in Broward county west of Fort Lauderdale.
Fort Lauderdale is known as the Venice of America, please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Lauderdale Fort Lauderdale is quite different from Miami. Our downtown didn't really mature until later. We do not have the crime nor the congestion of Miami. Both cities are spread out into suburban areas. |

For good schools and overall nice/safer neighbourhoods consider Weston, Davie, Cooper City, Plantation or Coral Springs. The eastern parts are nice but but expen$ive and you will be limited to private schools which means more money!!

Ok so the closer you are to the beach the more crime there is? Damn i had it backwards, i thought the farther you were from the beach the worse the neighborhood and the worst crime would exist. Wow...

Generally, it's because the closer you are to the water, the more crowded it gets. But I wouldn't use such a general rule to find a place to live; there are _lots_ of nice neighborhoods by the water and quite a few not-so-nice ones inland.
Personally, I feel that if you're going to stay far from the water AND try to remove yourself from Miami's diversity, there's not much reason left for being in South Florida. |
