Someone tries to tell me, "you havent lived here since 1999-2000, so you dont know what it's like NOW". I havent seen nor heard of any real positive changes going on there to make it any better than it was 10 yrs ago. In fact, I bet congestion and I know for an absolute fact that the C.O.L. is much higher than it used to be! Crime? I dunno. I know places like Boyton and Lake Worth are much worse than they used to be, just to name a few.
I didn't say that you didn't know what it is like now. I said it was presumptuous of you to comment, especially negatively. I should have been clearer. I believe its rude. And, I'm mystified as to your motives. I don't think you're trying to help people because you have never said anything positive.

My husband and I were talking tonight and we both said the thing we most both miss the most about NYC is simply being a pedestrian. We were fine when we were on Miami Beach, but when we moved to west Broward, we were pushing our luck. We've been here too many years now (10), and we're ready to go.

I'm sure it is bad there now and when it's bad in NYC, it's very bad - worse than here I'm sure. I left in the late 80's when the homelessness and trash on the street was horrendous. Miami Beach was a few years from exploding then and it was an exciting, cheap place to live.

If I were leaving NYC now, I'd consider other areas. It is expensive to live here and many are struggling to afford their now underwater homes. The property taxes are horrendous, as is homeowner's insurance. Neighbors can be cold - it is definitely a transient area. My kids lost good friends growing up because they moved.

On the positive side, I love wearing shorts in the winter, going to the beach at sunset, having a year-round tan and floating around in the pool.
Really! I grew up Inwood (norther manh.) and then moved to the upper east 96th and third for a few years, then Riverdale, and now Armonk in Westchester(4 years now).

I miss the same things about the city! You can get so spoiled. The diversity, walkability, and conviniences really diminish when you leave the city boroughs. Even when staying in New York.

Its crazy when you put things in perspective, when I visited Weston it looked busy compared to my town now and I loved that. Right now i have to drive 15 minutes to get to a decent shopping district in White Plains or Mt Kisco. Taxes are INSANE and people with very few exeptions are plastic.

I've been doing the math, and it still turns out better for us down south even taking the paycut. Who knows, lets see what happens.

I agree Fauve, it kills me when people do this on this site - continue to bash even after long gone. It's like going to a bad relationship and then just popping back in periodically to alert any potential mates that that particular person sucks...Move on!

No, I definitely make people aware of the issues S FL has. If I am lying, call me out. But I'm not. Crime, road rage, rude people are things I talk about. These are legit.

I did however tell Chelsa, who wants to move to S FL, that places like PBG, Jupiter, and Weston are nice places. Right Chelsa? I told her to look into Weston as it seems like the place to be.

If people were generally friendly, and crime and transients werent so rampant, I'd not have much to complain about.

Yes, he did. And as I told you hop the issues you have with this SFL is a problem that covers basically the whole US. That being said, if those are the normal complaints about just about every place, I'm inclined to believe that the place I am thinking of moving to is probably still nice.

Perhaps, and I hope you are happy Chelsa, if you decide to move to S FL instead of NC. But remember, I lived in NC, so unfriendly/rude people, lots of crime and transients were not something I had to deal with there. So it's not really "basically the whole US." There are a lot of places throughout the Southeast that are not like S FL.

I hear ya - but that was your experience Hop - I have a friend who lives in NC and had the opposite experience. She said that NC was pretty nice, but the issues that people found in SFL were the same she found in NC. So, everyone's experience is different. I can only hope that I am a nice enough person that people will be kind to me.

What part of NC did she move to?

If you live in Jupiter and you move to Charlotte to escape traffic/congestion, I'd say that wasnt a wise choice. So it depends on where in NC she was, and what she was trying to escape. If she lived in Davie and was trying to get away from rednecks or whatever, if she moved to Gastonia (just outside of Charlotte), then again, not a wise choice.

5 boroughs you know. The only time I ever heard anybody refer to the "City", as in MANHATTAN, was when I lived on Long Island. When I lived in Manhattan, and Queens, people would say which BOROUGH they were talking about. It wasn't an automatic thing that Manhattan was the "City" when you lived in the other boroughs.

My Mom passed away in 1993 and lived in Manhattan. Back in the late 80s, a 2 bedroom apartment (21st and 7th Ave.) in her building was renting furnished for $2,000 a month. Cheap? If you are referring to what things were back then that were RENT CONTROLLED/RENT STABLIZED, well that is a different story. My Mom's apartment was $400 a month, with RENT CONTROL. But even back then, when the rent controlled/stabilized tentant moved out, it was whatever the market would bear. If you want to blame anything, blame the elimination of rent control/stabilization for the sky high prices.

Please don't give out false information. Some of us are old enough to remember those times.
