Is $1350 Realistic for a 2Br. rental in Ft. Lauderdale?
I'm moving from Westchester NY. I want to be as conservative as possible. I have a job that will require that I travel bt. Ft. Lauderdale, downtown Miami and Palm Beach a few times a month otherwise I can work remotely.
Is my price range realistic for a nice 2Br. apartment somewhere decent in Ft. Lauderdale?

Here's a 3 bedroom in Coral Springs...you may be able to find something more convenient to everywhere, but I just happened to have the link, so yes, your price range is realistic. 5900 W Sample Rd # 6-304, Coral Springs, FL, 33067 - MLS ID#R2986119 - Rentals real estate - REALTOR.com®

Could you be more specific? Fort Lauderdale includes very run down neighborhoods where you may not want to live. Your price may be fine but it is determinant to know where.

Vvolin, I'm not quite sure yet where in Ft. Lauderdale. I'm looking for a safe neighborhood, walkable to the grocery store/supermarket, some nightlife (restraurant, bars, comedy clubs, movies, etc.). I'm single late 30s so not looking for a 'party' scene, a family neighborhood would be good as well as a professional neighborhood. Emphasis on Safe and walkable though.
I don't consider working class people the bain of the earth so I'm not oppossed to living in a working class neighborhood as long as it is safe.
From other posts I've heard Hollywood, Delray Beach, Coconut Creek. Any other neighborhoods you can suggest, the budget is $1350 for housing....is this realistic for these neighborhoods?

Sorry, I had misunderstood you. I though you were talking about the city of FTL, but now I understand you are considering the entire county. I know you can rent easily in east Hollywood (and do not discount the northeastern portion of Hallandale, if your commute allows it) for that amount. In Hollywood, look as west as 35th and Stirling. In Fort Lauderdale friends of mine rent a little house for $1200 in Victoria Park. And it is not a shack either. Many other towns would have what you need: Davie, Coral Ridge, Pompano and many more. But a single 30 year old would fit in better along the coast, where many more singles hang out. Not that there is anything wrong being surrounded by families.... I have always loved being next to the ocean, actually feeling and smelling the ocean breeze through my open windows. Since the real estate market has crashed, why not giving yourself a booster and actually live, if not along the beach, at least as close as possible to it? South Florida is loved, when it is loved, for the weather and the beach, isn't it?

Some things to consider...
1) 1350 is a magnificent 2 bedroom apartment. Shop around. Check out apartments.com. Rentals are dropping like rocks due to the foreclsoure bound landlords dropping prices. You cna find something pretty good for a lot less.
2) I looked up over 200 properties for rentals, both private and MLS. I researched them on the tax records and the Public records. I found not a single one I would feel comfortable renting due to the duress of the properties. Not a single one. I would go with a complex to start since they will not be foreclosed on. (a corporate foreclosure on a rental community is diffferent and you will have much more time)
3) You could get a great 2 bedroom for much cheaper in a nice complex. Really.
4) go private at your own risk. Realize you are 99.9% renting a home that is in huge duress. Realize the landlord will take your advance rents and deposits and pocket them instead of following law and putting in an escrow account. You will have none of it when they get foreclosed on. You will be left hanging.
I wanted to move to a smaller place, I rent for 1600, nice house. 3/2 , 2 car garage, jacuzzi, but small square footage.
I looked for 4 months down here, 4 months.
I was unable to find one home, apartment, condo, house, villa, etc, that was not in duress. Not a single one.
Where am I going? To a 55+ that is allowing 40+ mobile home. Double wide, huge place for 800. Place is checked out and not in foreclosure (the community) so I know I am safe.
I have many cats, so a complex is not where I wanted to go.
There are tons of really good complexes in margate, coconut creek, and most of the major cities in broward. I suggest looking there first.
The deals are incredible right now as they fight the huge vacancy rate and cheap rental foreclosures.
if you are going to go private...read some of this first
