Tell Me More About Hollywood, FL
I'm interested in moving to East(ish) Hollywood. While I really like Hollywood East of I-95 through the North and South Lake Area, it is just a little too sketchy for me.
SO, I'm curious about the 33021 area code - from I-95 West to 56th Ave and from about Jackson Street (S. of Hollywood Blvd) North to around Simms Street (N. of Sheridan Street).
It looks like a charming well-groomed area, but I want to know more.
Is there much crime in the area? Robberies common? Does the I-95 element spill over? Safe to walk around, go to the park? What is traffic like in and around the neighborhood? Strong neighborhood association? Obnoxious neighborhood association? Basically, what's it like to live there?
PS I'm from S. Fla, and have lived in Plantation, Lauderhill, Fort Lauderdale, & Kendall (even Hollywood, but I was really young and that was a long while ago :-), so give the deets like you're talking to a native :-) And it would be really helpful to hear from folks with first hand knowledge/experience.

You think the North and South Lake areas are sketchy? Wow, I wonder how you define sketchy.
33021 is sketchy, in my opinion. Guess it depends on what you like.

Are you sure you do not have the two areas backward? You may want to reconsider East (east of US1) Hollywood.

Yep!
Had a friend with a efficiency around there. Had someone break in while he was sleeping and stole everything. Hollywood is definitely suspect.

The Lakes area is not the same as the US 1 area. The OP seemed to be asking about North/South Lake. I'd say sketchy begins west of 16th Avenue.

Vigo, I should clarify, North and South Lake are Beautiful, but US 1 is pretty dang close and indeed pretty sketchy. Then from US 1 or 16th as you noted West its kind of to very rough depending on the block. The area has great potential and beautiful homes but...rough. Now, to me West of I-95 Hollywood Hills, Park East, & parts of Hillcrest seem to improve, with Hollywood hills having some nice mid-sized homes with pretty landshaping.
But what I wanted to know is what I see what I get...if that makes sense! Thanks!
Oh and the people who had bad experiences, where was this? What 'hood, what streets?
Thanks!

That publix at the circle is suspect and so is the area north of the circle. The area north of the circle has a lot of half way houses and such. Its not the lakes but close enough to it.

South of the circle is definitly no better...all the way to hallandale bch blvd along US1. right up to the dade county line. i don't think there is any halfway houses on this side of the circle, theres plenty of crackhouses though i can tell you that...when the police bust one, three more take its place.
Unless you own a gun, or want to live in a crappy area for some reason, stay away from the parts mentioned in this thread.
I wish i had known about this site earlier...i never would have moved to the area.

I believe this. I work in Downtown Hollywood, and although the downtown core is nice, it is surrounded by a lot (and I mean a lot) of areas and neighborhoods that are crime-ridden and unsafe. During the day, when the restauarants and clubs are mostly empty, a lot of riff raff walk around downtown, Young Circle and Publix.
Last year there were a number of murders and robberies in the area (not in downtown proper), the most notbable the Italian taxi cab driver who was killed for pocket cash.
I'd avoid Hollywood as a place of residence, but it's a good place to visit at night or on the weekend when crowds are present. I say this with some regret because I think Hollywood had so much potential. The coup de grace was the closing the of Arts Academy this month. The bank accross the street has even closed up shop and moved. Same with Quiznos.
