Liability?
Last week my homeowner's development hired a company to paint the fences and doors of all the units where I live. The workers moved the steel weather 'mat' by my front door, just far enough out to paint under the door (which they never did!). I stepped down, outside my door, didn't see that the mat had been moved, and my ankle twisted off the side of the mat. I fell on my knee, and immediately knew I had injured the opposite foot/ankle.
I'm awaiting X-Ray results for diagnosis. The foot/ankle may be broken and it is unknown if surgery is required, or how long I have to be immobilized.
I work part-time, and am now not able to work. I am in much pain. I live alone, and for the present time, am depending on friends and neighbors to help walk my dog, help me around the house, grocery shop, errands, etc.
Medical bills are mounting and I'm looking into renting an electric scooter (expensive!) I cannot afford the expense that this is, and will cost.
In the past, I've had a few opportunities to seek and gain financial compensation for wrongs experienced, and never did. I was always covered under my employer's benefits and never lost wages. Friends have suggested that now I am experiencing difficulties because of this incident, and that the painters should also share some of the responsibility for their carelessness.
Any thoughts?
