Safety in Pembroke Pines, Hollywood and Plantation
I am planning to move to Ft. Lauderdale andI am considering buying a condo in Pembroke Pines, Hollywood or Plantation. I am looking for a place that is safe, low in crime and about 30 mins or less from FIU? Can anyone tell me if these are safe places to live and suggest any other that fit my requirement.

Plantation is safe but it is not close to FIU... especially the main campus. Try Pembroke Pines to be closer to school.

Plantation is the nicest, followed by PP and Hollywood. None are really close to FIU's main campus though.

Safest is Pembroke Pines, followed by Plantation and Hollywood, but Plantation is the nicest overall city. That being said, Plantation has shady areas east of University Dr, and Hollywood has them all over. The closest thing to a "shady area" in Pembroke Pines is the east side, but that area is acutally fairly quiet, just not spotless.

I have to disagree with this post (hate to do it to you...). Plantation has a few yucky areas as does PP. I would not rate one as safer than the other overall as safety varies so much in neighborhood. In both cities, far west is safer than east. Hollywood is kind of yucky.
However, the nice neighborhoods in Plantation are MUCH nicer than the nice neighborhoods in Pines. It is also more convenient that Pines. However, Pines is probably a better value as prices in the nice areas of Plantation can be quite high.

I can't say I disagree overall, but I don't feel that the eastern side of Pembroke Pines, although not the best area overall, is dramatically more dangerous than the western side. If you drive through those neighborhoods day and night, you don't see much out of the ordinary for a working class neighborhood. I can't say the same for Plantation, especially near State road 7. As far as where I would rather live, I would take Plantation or Hollywood east of US1. If I was commuting to FIU, I would acutally look at either Weston (safer) or Miramar (more convenient and about the same/nicer than Pines) off of I-75 (for easy access to the turnpike extension) and wouldn't look further north than 595. I'm actually not a big fan of any part of Pembroke Pines (but not at all due to crime), and while most of Plantation is really nice, I think it's too far north to be feasible, and I think Hollywood is too far east to be feasible.

I lived in the area of Hollywood between Dixie and I95 for a while. I was not thrilled with the direction those neighborhoods were going. I dated a guy who was east of U.S. 1 a few blocks south of Hollywood Blvd., and that was a very nice neighborhood and I felt comfortable there. Hollywood Hills and Emerald Hills are both considered good areas. Hollywood is convenient for commuting which is a good thing. Pembroke seems awfully traffic-riddled for my taste, don't know about crime there though. Not familiar with Plantation.

The OP is looking for condos and I assumed there wouldn't be much in Hollywood east of US1 that is in any way affordable. I agree the neighborhoods there are nicer than the rest of Hollywood.
I think the OP should look closer to FIU.

I think either Miramar by I-75 or even Doral which is right near the school could work. Even Sweetwater itself, where FIU is, is very ugly, but doesn't have a lot of crime at all. The biggest con to Doral is the traffic/overall brash look, and the biggest problem with Sweetwater is the dumpy "paved lawns and burglar bars" look. If I were going to live in Broward and was looking strictly for low crime and short commute, I wouldn't stray further than a few miles east or west of I-75, or north of I-595, biased towards Weston for lowest crime and Miramar for shortest commute. West Miramar tends to be prone to on-and-off burglary sprees, though.
