I looked in Miami Beach on the off chance I'd find a 2 bedroom apt in your price range, and then I found this...the schools are good in Miami Beach and I know the gifted coordinator for Dade is excellent. Not exactly what you're looking for but I know this area very well, and you can't do better really...it's even walking distance to 41st street - shops, grocery store, etc. and the beach. This is an incredible deal - in fact I'd ask a lot of questions about the financial health of the owner becoz t's almost too good a deal.

hmmm. i don't know the area too well and when I worked a bit south of it it was a little rough (this was a long time ago) so i looked at it on the satellite and it looks really nice! i will call tomorrow. Thank you.
looking at the satellite I found it interesting that I wouldn't live in Bal Harbour: not only is it way too close to an inlet, but it is also very close to the poop pipe, which is off of Haulover Beach.

My husband grew up about 2 blocks from there. The mid-beach area was traditionally a solid middle class jewish area. More recently it has benefited from the popularity of South Beach as a nice place to live that is also close to the action.

it is really cute. my ex grew up in bal harbour so he would probably not object. it isn't close to a beach as i prefer, but it is close to a city, and i like that. you seem to know your real estate quite well so i will check it out. i would be out of my comfort zone, and that might be a good thing.

I just realized too that that house is right around the corner from the elementary school. Your son is in the 2nd grade? I hope it works out. I think that could be a really good place for you both.

thanks! i was busy today in west palm looking at places, and took my son to the norton museum of art. i love that kid: he liked the museum so much he was positively ebullient tonight. He said it was the best day he ever had.
i am thinking maybe palm beach public school, as i found a pretty amazing apartment very close to it. ON the island, which shocks me. I never thought I could afford to live on palm beach.
but i will definitely call and ask to see this place you found, fauve, i am so pleased to hear it is near the school. what is the name of the school? i will have to call them too. i am meeting with the principal of palm beach public school tomorrow.
i would not be on the beach up there either, and i would be in 1200 sq feet, but it is on the island.
i hear west palm has a lot of issues, and the school likely draws most of its students from west palm ,as most people on pal beach use the palm beach day school or rosarian - or at least they did back int he day when my sister went to rosarian
and insight on living on palm beach hear the okechobee bridge? i heard it is dangerous, but the neighborhood looks anything but

The elementary school is North Beach --it's on the spit of land between Prairie & Chase between 41st and 44th St. It recently underwent a total remodel.
Glad to hear you found a great place in Palm Beach. It's amazing that housing prices are finally becoming affordable - a welcome result of the housing meltdown. I hope everything works out.

Not everyone who lives in Florida loves the beach!! In fact, most of my friends down here are NOT "beach people." (including me).

I can tell by the way people just leave their trash here for me to pick up during their once a year jaunts to my yard that they don't love the beach. But I wasn't suggesting that all people should live on the beach. That would be a nightmare! Please, if you don't like it - stay as far away as you like. Do be aware, however that the waste from your house is washing out into the ocean and don't put drugs and chemicals down the drain. I don't want my kid swimming in your pills.
I would just prefer it if a few of the people who do love looking out at the water and living east, like I do, and who are young with kids, would move here so that I don't have to move somewhere I don't like in order for my kid to have playmates. This is a great environment for kids other than the fact that most of the kids we meet are on vacation and it is hard to form lasting friendships that way.
