The city of Pembroke Pines has its own school system (Pembroke Pines charter schools) as well as Broward County schools. Admission to the charter system is by lottery and parents must pledge volunteer hours (30 I think). Pembroke Pines Charter Schools > Home ( DNN 4.0.2 )
The families I know with kids in the system consider themselves very fortunate.

The Pines Charter Schools have a good reputation, but I wouldn't move to Pembroke Pines just because of the charter schools, since students outside of Pembroke Pines can attend and it's a lottery-based system to get in.

Thank you so much for the info, Attila & CTR, very helpful! We have Charter lotteries here and it's a bummer if you don't get in. For one school, we were 15 on the "white boy" list (vs. non-white boy, white girl and non-white girl), and another school we were 74 - no chance for either.
