Not a tree. But nice fruit anyway - you can grow your own pineapples.

Actually citrus is not obvious, citrus trees are not native to southern Florida, they were brought to Florida by the Spanish during the colonial period. Generally speaking they need more water than the tropical trees and plants which are native to southern Florida. In any case, the citrus belt, at least on the commercial level, is in central Florida. That doesn't mean you can't grow one in your backyard, of course, but you have to take care of them for good results.

One of the best sources of information, at least to start, is the University of Florida-Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF-IFAS) Extension, I believe there is one for each county.

Here is the link for Palm Beach County:
Palm Beach County Extension

It is probably easy to find the one for Broward County, in fact UF-IFAS has a small campus in Fort Lauderdale, I believe.

There was a period of years when all citrus trees in southeastern Florida had to be cut down due to some disease, but that ban was lifted a few years ago. Not sure about the exact dates and the details, maybe some one can give us more of the history.

Good luck!

Me and my wife have been wanting a sweet tamarind tree for so long, but don't know where to look. You think you can help?

Actually, I'm pretty certain I have a small one in the nursery. Consider it a gift. I'll ask my husband to see for certain and DM you to let you know. You can come by anytime Saturday to pick it up (I'll DM you the address, plus this is when we're normally open to the public so not putting us out at all).

Back in the eighties there was this fantastic fruit tree nursery out in the boonies in Davie. Can't remember the name, and I don't know if it's still there. Jaboticaba, Jackfruit, Raisin Tree, Allspice, Tamarind - you name it, they had it. I got a "Valencia Pride" Mango there, planted in parents' yard in the early eighties, and last time I was down it was still there. I had a Soursop (Guanabana) that I got from the Fairchild Ramble in Miami, but we moved before I saw it do anything. South Florida is heaven for growing tropical fruit.
