Fort Lauderdale is a very nice city. There's a TON of young people living in the city. I'm not sure of the affordabilityy, but if I ever moved out of Dade County; I'd definitely move to Ft. Lauderdale.

I lived here for five years and then moved back to NY - now I'm back again and job hunting - great fun.

Its hard to find good jobs in Broward and I don't want to commute - I'm a NYer who barely knows how to drive LOL.

The Noseums are driving me nuts - they are especially brutal when I'm on the computer- must be the screen light. I've been sitting here for around 30 minutes and I've been bitten at least 10 times. WTF? How do you get them out of your house?

Default Moving

Me and My friend are also moving to Fort Lauderdale from New Orleans so it's really hard to figure out from here what the good areas of town are. Can anyone tell me about the area just north of Davie Blvd. Near SW 15th ave.? Both of us are working up till we leave so its hard to get down there to look around. Thanks

Go look it up for yourself American FactFinder. Some suburban areas are more heavily hispanic, but interestingly these were the wealthier areas in Broward like Weston(40 percent in 2005) and West Pembroke Pines. Yes, there are a lot of blacks, and certainly a lot of gays, but I don't really see a big deal in that. Just stay out of the BAD black neighborhoods, its not like all black people are criminals.

Oh, and Fort Lauderdale ranked among the safest of major cities in Florida(city-data crime index in the 500s, which is about right for any major American city, while most Florida major cities were at least in the 800s). Still, stay careful in certain neighborhoods, especially some areas along Sunrise blvd and the Sistrunk corridor.

Oh, and there is a lot of porn here.
Wow, my first post!

That's a working class barrio-ish area. I honestly have no idea about crime there (surprise!) but I never got any horrible impressions from the area, including driving through at night (west of 95 is a different story). Basically, if you are looking in Ft. Lauderdale proper (or Wilton Manors/Oakland Park) you want to stay north of Oakland Park Blvd and east of Dixie Hwy. South of Oakland Park Blvd, locate east of US1, there are exceptions but better safe than sorry.

But yeah, it is pretty hard to learn the boundaries IN Ft. Lauderdale. Where are you working? What's your price range? Have you considered surrounding areas?

Ft Lauderdale and surrounding area is very trashy, most areas of it anyway.

The more I get around Broward the more I see what bad shape its in. Congested, dirty old bright colored condos that look 40 years old and beaten up trash haven apartments tend to be the majority.

Pawn shops, Porn shops, Payday Loans, Immigration Lawyers, Trailer parks, sleazy dirty looking people walking around, lots of boarded up out of business stores, crazy amount of mini malls, congested traffic, THATS ALL I SEE!
Everytime I have to venture to different parts of Broward thats all I see.
I was in a part of Davie the other day that was almost exact to what I viewed today.

Im in a store today in Ft Lauderdale to grab a pack of smokes and as Im waiting in line in comes a guy with bare feet, stained shorts, orange tank top, and red hat (backwards) and whats he buying? More beer! Reeked of alcohol. Typical Lauderdale trash.

*When I first moved down here this is when I knew how cruddy it was down here. Im on Pines Blvd West side heading East doing some shopping and all is well on Pines West, everyone has there teeth accounted for, new nice upscale shopping places, nice cars, nice car dealerships, good looking people. Well at some point I think right where the K Mart is on Pines, ones you go east of there and continue on some MAN does it take a nose dive. The WORST looking "apartments", bad road conditions, trailer parks, drugged out looking people.

If your lucky enough to live in West Miramar or West Pines, or even Weston I suppose, try to stay in that area and dont leave it. There is probabbly all you need there anyway as far as shopping and people and places to eat. That South Florida is not bad to me, a little to diverse to my liking and in some areas snobby and concieted but it sure beats the TRASH you will see when you leave these nice areas.

Shame.

Maybe you need to get a better job or a roommate so you don't have to live on State Road 7 or Oakland Park Blvd anymore. I mean that in the nicest way though, don't mean to sound conceited since you didn't sound very conceited at all. I could understand why you wouldn't want a roommate though. I bet even my car isn't nice enough.

Look, your right, but I have never been to a town without a trashy side like that. Ft. Lauderdale is sleazy to the max, way more than most places but the surrounding areas aren't all that different from anywhere else I have been. Just a different kind of ****ty apartment and a differently dressed drunk. The solution to that problem is to not live on that side of town. BTW- most of those condos look 40 years old because they ARE, and you would be surprised to see that plenty of humble, decent, hard working working class people live behind those sheets of condos and sometimes even IN those condos . Blue collar doesn't mean you are better than them. If you live on that side of town, either do something about it and get out or just realize it is what it is and that you aren't really that much "better" than the humanity that surrounds you and neither are us supposed snobs out in Weston or wherever else.

Key words- East of US1 (Dixie Hwy further north), or west of University (the turnpike further north). That leaves you a relatively large area of trash, quite a few nice spots mixed in and a few small ghettos within that. Personally I would rather live in an area with vast "trash" than vast ultra-dangerous ghettos like most US inner cities.
