Smile Moving to Ft. Lauderdale Questions!!

Hello All! My friend and I are thinking about moving to ft. lauderdale in august or september. She would be attending the Institute of Art. Does anyone know what the living situation is around that area...safe, affordable?? Or is there good public transpertation in the area?? We are both white young 20's and need a safe place still close to activities?? A studio or one bedroom around $800-$900 a month??
Also are there a lot of young people living in this city or mostly families and retirees?

Thanks Alot!

ive lived in ft lauderdale for 5 yrs now, moving to tampa next month....ft lauderdale is almost all younger people today, its no longer a retirement place...it has a Huge gay population and is mostly hispanic/latin/black....as a white guy i was clearly and noticeably in the minority living here and especially not being gay as well....all that being said as a young person u can have a lot of fun here and enjoy the experience if u r smart, very careful and dont expect too much. theres tons of partying, basically all its good for...bars, clubs, strip joints everywhere. lot of very shady, sketchy people so trust nobody especially if u r a girl. many scams prey on young girls here, lot of internet pornography is based out of ft lauderdale. the art institute is a good school on 17th st right by the ocean. u can find an older 1 bdrm somewhere nearby for maybe 900 but it wont be too nice. maybe split a better 2 bdrm. all in all u can have fun but definetly be careful and move away when u r done with school and partied enough.

The Art Institute has nearby housing and shuttle service. A lot of the students rent nearby in downtown Fort Lauderdale. There are some modest rentals in area that have 4 or 6 units and are efficiencies or 1 bedroom - you should be able to find something within your budget - very convenient. A lot of the students have bikes. Parking at the institute can be a real bear.

Let me know if I can be of further help. We have had a lot of the students intern at our business and we have also employed a few as well. Good luck to you.

Ft Laud is mostly black/hispanic??? Hmmm, yes it is very diverse but I am not too sure I would say it is mostly Hispanic/black. Yes, it has a large gay pop, but I dont think a straight guy would still be in the minority. Well maybe at the Institute.

white includes most hispanic/latin varieties in that stat brother.....by the day, and boatload, broward becomes overwhelmingly more latin/hispanic/black. just get out and look around. the 3rd world invasion and miami spillover will destroy broward county eventually if not already in many spots

lol..

I swear sometimes most of you guys are racist. So you're telling me that Latin & Black people can't be good American citizens? They can't contribute to the community like any other White American?

I think Jsn..has a bit of a problem! Ft Lauderdale is becoming more black/hispanic but it still is more of a majority white area and no Hispanics are not classified as white...which in a way is stupid because someone from Spain would be considered Hispanic but could be blonde/blue eyed from Northern Spain, whereas an Italian with dark skin would be white. That is why racial compiling is stupid in my opinion anyway.

You must be joking me. Fort Lauderdale was 9.5 percent hispanic as of the 2005 U.S census. Compare this to 9.5 percent in the 2000 U.S census. If im correct, that means the hispanic population isint growing. Oh, and by the way, 12.2 percent of the U.S was hispanic in 2000, 14.4 percent was in 2005. Go look it up for yourself www.factfinder.census.gov. Some suburban areas are more heavily hispanic, but interestingly these were the wealthier areas in Broward like Weston(40 percent in 2005) and West Pembroke Pines. Yes, there are a lot of blacks, and certainly a lot of gays, but I don't really see a big deal in that. Just stay out of the BAD black neighborhoods, its not like all black people are criminals.

Oh, and Fort Lauderdale ranked among the safest of major cities in Florida(city-data crime index in the 500s, which is about right for any major American city, while most Florida major cities were at least in the 800s). Still, stay careful in certain neighborhoods, especially some areas along Sunrise blvd and the Sistrunk corridor.

Oh, and there is a lot of porn here.
