"I live in NYC and I am considering moving down to Broward County to work for the Broward County Sheriffs Office. They are hiring big time... "

There's a reason for that

I know someone that worked with the Palm Beach County sheriff's office for over 30 years and they just retired because they said the crime and gangs have gotten so bad that they're just done with it, and the crime is basically the same in Broward as in Palm Beach.

I heard about BSO being very poltical, but I don't think it differes from many other departments. I took a trip down to Fort Myers/Cape Coral area and I liked Broward County much better. I know there is more crime in Broward but there is crime wherever one goes.

I am going to down to Broward for additional testing May 21st. I am not certified, but was in the NYPD Academy for two months and had to resign due to financial problems. Unfortunately, the NYPD only pays rookies 25k . Therefore, I putting was myself in crushing debt between the weight of rent, bills and student loans.

Anyone know anything about the Academy area? It's in a town called Davie and that is the same location of my test. You guys have been very help and I truly thank all of you for your replies.

Matt

The Academy is located just off of I-595 at the Davie exit. I-595 is the east-west Interstate.

The Academy is located adjacent to a huge campus of colleges, universities, and vocational schools - it is the educational center for this part of southwest Broward - actually the entire county.

That is correct.

B.S.O. is no diffrent than any other Department it has it's politics as you have stated.Understand one motto of the retired Officers ranks "Find a large police Department and hide" There is not one retired officer that i have not heard make this comment.

There are a bunch of apartments in this area so you can start your search for a new home there! prepare for your new LIFESTYLE if your offered employment.Make sure you're well moved before you start the academy. You will need to focus.

If you make it in the academy look for an instructor by the name Dep. Sullivan
(i believe he is a LT. by now) maintain your distance he is a huge butt kisser.
He has befriended many of fellow Deputies.

Let me know who your physcologist Doctor is going to be it might be Doctor Spock (i think that's how he spells his name) he has been there forever!

Also the current Sheriff is actually on his last term and should not be an issue to you.The only good thing the current Sheriff has done is he actually won the Law Enforcement duties for alot of towns.

Goodluck to you and your family.

Thank you for your reply, you seem to know a great deal about department. I really hope this works out for me. I always wanted to work down there due to the opportunities. I have a college degree with no criminal or medical history so I am not too concerned.

How difficut is the academy? I am slighlty out of shape but I am working out now. Do you know what type of assignments rookies usually get? I an a true believer in "doing your time " so I am not expecting anything fancy, just curious.

My fiance is obviously coming with me and like me she is also college educated and has a good resume so I believe she shouldn't have any trouble finding a decent corporate job.

Can any of you offer any advice of what should I expect life to be like in Broward as a Deputy Sheriff? How can I make such a large transition run smoothly by knowing what to expect living in Broward County?

What towns should I live in if I am seeking a quite and family type area with nice housing/condos. I will be renting for at least my first year and looking to spend 800 - 1400 per month. How is traffic, quality of life, crime, restaurants and schools?

Thank you

Matt

Hi Matt,

I am also from NY (Rockland County). YAY New York!

But transferred to S. Florida about 11 years ago. Although I am not in law enforcement some of my friends are. One in particular has been with the BSO
for quite some time.

You should expect to work you buns off! He makes KILLER money. But he also works the graveyard shift (more money) and tons of details and overtime. The benefits working with BSO are awesome! He is pretty much set for life.

He and his wife live in Coral Springs. It's a nice town for family, restaurants, shopping etc. For the most part, the schools are good too. I would also highly recommend Parkland (pricey, but great schools), then Coral Springs, Weston, Plantation, Pembroke Pines, Davie & W. Sunrise.

I would not go near certain areas like N. Lauderdale, Lauderhill, E. Sunrise, and Margate. Although they are probably more affordable, they have a much higher crime rate.

You should expect Broward County to be relatively crowded. It's FULL of former New Yorkers and people from the North.

If you need some additional info, let me know. I would be more than happy to help ya out!

Regards,
Julie

jpimus,

I have a college degree with no criminal or medical history so I am not too concerned.

A college degree does not even come close to getting you the job.Although, it does look good.If you are appointed into the Academy you're fellow cadets will be from the following backgrounds.

1. High School dropouts with only a GED

2. Electricians, plumbers, construction workers, Truck drivers basically a host of blue collar workers.

3. Former military

4. Lawyers

5. Security guards

6. School Teachers

7. Firefighters

8. Airline pilots

9. Former KGB agents (i knew one)

10. Stay at home Moms

11. former Adolescent gang bangers/ drug users (although not heavy usage)

12. Salesman

13. former pro atheletes

14. Ceo's of companies

15. Small business owners

16. Computer geeks

17. Corrections officers

18. Nurses

19. Garbage truck drivers

20. Road crew surveyors

The list goes on and on.So, remember your College education is a good start but does not get you the job by along shot. They are looking for a special person for the job and they will find that person regrdless of background or Education.I had a friend with a criminal justice degree and he could not get hired. He eventually opened a Private investigation company and is doing well.

They will weed the bad apples out mainly thru your Polygraph test and physcology test these are VERY intense procedures.Although i'am not saying your background check or your T.A.B. test scores along with oral interviews are not important.

If they only offer you a Corrections postion TAKE IT! it is really good money and your foot in the door.Remember you are considered Law Enforcement in Florida even as a Corrections officer and there is a bunch of overtime and you will be able to go to the road Academy and then you will be considered "cross certified" I know several Corrections officers and they are every bit of a Professional Law Enforcement officer. They also go thru a vigorous training academy.

Goodluck, keep us posted.

I want to clear up what I meant by 'not having anything to worry about' due to having a degree and no criminal past. I was referring to the background check concerning basic requirements and understand 100% that those simple qualities alone do not make me the perfect police candidate.

I actually do have a one minor concerns with BSO. I was twice in the NYPD academy. The first class was in 2006, followed by January-March of this year. Each time I resigned due to financial reasons. They only pay recruits 25k and they make purchase your own uniforms for about $2000.

I went back this past January because my fiance’s promotion was going to allow us to make a reasonable living while I was in the academy. Unfortunately, in February her promotion fell through and I was back in the same financial turmoil I experienced in 2006. I was falling behind on bills and student loan payments. Therefore, I was forced to return to my previous job to make ends meet. Until now, I’ve been unable to convince my fiancé to make the move down to Broward. I finally have her support and better yet, her company has an office down in Fort Lauderdale. I am hoping BSO will understand my issue with twice leaving the academy because I had no choice. Salle Mae was not interested in hearing about the NYPD contract disputes.

Thanks again for all your help.

Matt

I understand your situation.Remember your credit will be looked at and has disqualified several people.I think they look at it as "character" if your a person of your word type thing.

Best of luck to you and yours.
