Hello! My husband and I are considering a move to So. Florida to be near my mother who lives in Pompano Beach (which would be too costly an area for us to move to). We don't know Florida at all (other than Pompano/Ft. Lauderdale area). We'd like to live no more an one hour away, in a nice community with conscientious, artistic sort of folks, where we can rent or possibly buy an affordable small house. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

When I think of Pompano Beach, I don't think of it as an expensive area. You may want to look at Hollywood, as they have a small downtown area with artistic like shops & restaurant. But safety can be hit or miss. Las Olas is a beautiful area, but I believe expensive in comparison to Pompano Beach. Coconut Grove in Dade County is artistic, but safety is hit or miss.

do you have kids or it's just the 2 of you? that makes a big difference.
Pompano is relatively affordable compared to other areas in Broward, what is you price range?

It will be just the two of us (my son will have finished college by the time we move). Since the goal is to be able to help my mother, and the costs in Pompano aren't as high as I first imagined, we'll try to be close by. We are in the initial stages of figuring it out and wouldn't be moving until later next year. Thanks to what I've been reading on various postings, and responses from you folks, as well as checking out prices on Craigslist, we'll most likely rent an apartment or condo, preferably something near the ocean. Thanks for your help.
