She says that pretty much all of the houses down in this area are like this because it is so hot that people dont want carpeting in their living room. I would prefer carpeting since I have a 22 month old and I would like her to have some cushioning if she happens to fall.. I know we can get a big area rug but I would really prefer carpet if its possible.. I just wanted to get some opinions about this. Thanks all!

As a Weston resident, and an experienced parent (3 kids ranging in age from 11-16), I caution you not to make a long term decision with a 1 year old in mind.

Carpet in this climate is not desirable in the social areas of a home. It gets wet, and moldy, and dirty, plus it's hot. Your child will not be 1 forever. Get a cheap rug and throw it away once you no longer have toddlers. Your feet and your home will thank you. Tile is SOOOOOOOO much easier to keep clean than carpet.

Wood is very high-maintenance and gets damaged easily. It is also very expensive to install. That is why it is not as common. Tile is easy to clean and you don't need to worry about water damaging it.

That said, I greatly prefer carpeting. It is much softer and easier to walk on. The heat is a factor, but that is what air-conditioning is for. I really wish carpeting would come back into style.

Also, what is up with all of the cookie-cutter Mediterranean houses? Can't they come up with something new? Is it a rule that any house built after 1992 must like identical to the ones next door? I wish they would start building some more futuristic styled houses or maybe some retro ones.

I'm sure your realtor can come up with some rentals with carpeting - I've seen a bunch. Often townhomes which were built in the 1980s and 1990s had carpeting originally and many still do. I personally hate carpets - for all the Florida-specific reasons people have posted plus I have allergies and dogs.

If you are going to want to put down rugs, one good idea is the Flor carpet squares - you can replace one square if it gets damaged or stained. Probably useful with a baby!

just a word of advice...if you're first renting make sure you do it through a realtor and that the realtor checks the landord to make sure he's not behind on his mortgage.
I've heard of people having to move out because the house foreclosed while they were paying their rent and they lost all the deposit money on top of it.
Be careful.

Hi,

I bought a single home a year and a half ago in Hollywood which is just east of Pembroke Pines and the living room has carpeting, so does my neighbor. I was going to switch to wooden floors but now I have a 6month old so I hear you!
