Nautica? South of the turnpike? I do agree that you can find your pockets of section 8 out west that are worse than the Hollywood neighborhood mentioned in this thread.

It's not about "how rough is it compared to Chicago" - it's about the fact that you can rent a 2 bedroom apartment in a safe neighborhood on a golf course for $750 compared to $850/mo for a sketchy neighborhood in a diminishing and relatively dangerous city just 10 minutes away.

Where can you rent a 2 bedroom on a golf course in a safe area for $750? Pray tell - I'm sure a lot of posters want to hear about this development!

Water View Condo - 2 beds/2bath (http://miami.craigslist.org/brw/apa/1707449974.html - broken link) - 2/2 beautiful water view in Coral Springs for $700/mo

Spacious 1br 1 1/2 bath located off golf course! (http://miami.craigslist.org/brw/apa/1712548332.html - broken link) 1/1.5 - $750 free cable.

2/1 CONDO~TOTALLY UPDATED~MOVE IN READY~GORGEOUS KITCHEN~PETS OK (http://miami.craigslist.org/brw/apa/1711473904.html - broken link) 2br looks nice (although questionable what part of pompano).

BEAUTIFUL 2/2 Split Floorplan, Newly Renovated, close to everything! (http://miami.craigslist.org/brw/apa/1711274103.html - broken link) - 2/2 in Tamarac water view

>sirst floor condo w/ tile, new paint, and storage room< (http://miami.craigslist.org/brw/apa/1707739133.html - broken link) 2/2, how about Coral Springs.

This isn't hard to find... and if you look hard enough, there are better deals than just what's on Craigslist.

Why would anyone pay $850 to live in Hollywood?

VR2 - Im not sure Id trust Craig's List 100% - there are a LOT of scammers and people on the verge of foreclosure getting every last dime out of a place. Plus brokers are out there baiting and switching - posting properties that dont exist or exist at different prices just to get you to call. Notice how all the cheap places are with Rent1 Sale1? If I were renting my place, Id call a place like Coldwell Banker or Esslingler Wooten, etc. I wouldnt call Rent1/Sale1.

For instance - the house in Sunrise - I just found this ad for the very same address and house that lists the rent at $2200, which is more in line for a house of that quality - http://hotpads.com/search/listing/8E635D5C-F19F-4A1D-CF91113BEC008D60_Z57 (broken link)

loc: 9350 NW 32nd St Sunrise, FL 33351 Sunrise FL US - Google Maps

I spent 2 minutes getting some listings. The point is, there ARE places if you look.

4109 Nw 88Th Ave Unit: 107, Coral Springs, FL, 33065 - MLS #F1046605 - Rentals real estate - REALTOR.com®

And for the same $850 for a duplex or whatever in hollywood - you can get a pretty sweet looking 9th floor condo in a nice community, granite lobby, 24 hour security, great neighborhood, highrise building with all the ammenities like a pool, tennis courts, great views, and right near the sawgrass, turnpike, and I95..

10777 W. Sample Rd Unit: 911, Coral Springs, FL, 33065 - MLS #F1051459 - Rentals real estate - REALTOR.com®

Again, there is ZERO reason to live in Hollywood. ZERO... It's foolish.

Many of my co workers lived in surrounding communities, and had problems with cars and homes being broken into, and less than savoury neighbors who left bags of garbage everywhere but in the dumpsters.

My friend used to have a townhouse in West Miramar, but the amount of section 8 renters, which the HOA allowed, was far higher than anywhere I've lived in Hollywood. OP, you are not in a bad or dangerous area. It's reasonably quiet and safe. The western suburbs have plenty of ghetto people moving in, especially Pines and Miramar. If you stay in Hollywood, you may want to try renting east of US1 once your lease is up. I would reccommend a condo as opposed to a rental community. You could also find a rental in Emerald Hills, which is more expensive, but affordable for two working people.

P.S. Those French Canadians mentioned upthread are laid back and friendly. I've never waited in line on the beach for pizza behind them. At least you can get to the beach in Hollywood in the winter, and there is space on the beach, unlike Miami and Ft Lauderdale.
Finally someone that is in touch with reality and what west miramar is REALLY like. Refreshing to say the least !

Fact is, for similar money you can get into a nicer, newer house in cleaner, well kept areas and be only a 10 - 15 minute drive from downtown Hollywood anyways.

I would NEVER recommend living anywhere in South Florida that doesn't have a home owners association unless you are on a huge lot like somewhere in Davie/Sunshine Ranches.

This is coming from about 6 years living in downtown Hollywood and a good friend who is just west of Dixie near 24th and Pierce.

HUH ???????

There is absolutely nothing wrong with living in the Emerald Hills / Lakes of Emerald Hills / Hollywood Hills section of Hollywood or East of U.S. 1.
