I have lived in Ft. Myers for 20 years. I am originally from NJ. I have seen the crime rate increase with the influx of people from other parts. The area near Lee Memorial Hospital which is downtown is quaint but tends to be very mixed culturally. Not necessarily a safe area. If you are talking about Lee Memorial HealthPark, then that is a lot better of an area. You do have to practice common sense and caution. Because we are all from somewhere else, I find that there is not so much the sense of neighborly conduct. People tend to be more guarded.
