FORT MYERS is very trashy with extremely high unemployment and very high crime rate most of the city is trashy and rundown....

Not all of Ft. Myers is bad... In fact a majority of it is nice. You just have get to know what areas to look in what areas to avoid. It doesn't take that long to learn to stay south of the city center. AND avoid at all cost North Ft. Myers

I disagree about "avoid North Fort Myers". Some of the nicest communities in the area are there! You just need to look near the river, ie. Riverbend, Admiralty, Daugherty Creek to name a few. It is close to 75, no toll to go into downtown Fort Myers and very quiet there. Avoid parts of North Fort Myers like Suncoast, just like you want to avoid parts of Fort Myers or Estero or Naples.

Thank you everyone for the input. My husband will transfer from the job he has here to one in Florida. We are keeping our options open so we're not only focusing on Ft Meyers we're also looking into Tampa and Brandon.

The good areas in Fort Myers are Mcgregor blvd, Denials, Cypress, Colonial Blvd, San Carlos, and the rest is rundown. Avoid Palm Beach blvd and Martin Luther King at all costs. I like Estero...15 Minutes from Fort Myers. I think most people live in single-family houses in Cape Coral and work in Fort Myers. The population in Cape Coral is actually double of Fort Myers. Cape Coral is nicer than Fort Myers, but it's far away from everything, high traffic at peak hours...Inconvenient as hell. Fort Myers has more black people and mexicans. The towns around Fort Myers are mostly white except Lehigh Acres. The beach is kinda far.

I hope you read the FAQ. If I was starting over with a young family, and had the choice, I would pick Tampa over SWF. SWF is better for people who already have some sort of financial base or are more weather conscious, like second homers or snowbirds or retirees.

I think Tampa would be a more normal city for kids to grow up in, but like anywhere, you have to pick your neighbourhoods. Main thing is to not buy a house until you have lived in an area and learn the inside scoop on all the issues.

I have a question I can't seem to make a post about it.

My families company is relocating to SouthWest Florida. My boss currently lives in West Rotunda. He is 50 so this is suitable for him. I am being told that our office location will be within 10 miles of West Rotunda, most likely 10 miles North. My question is; where should I move to - I don't want to drive an hour and would prefer to keep it to a minimum. So I think that leaves Tampa, St. Pete and Sarasota all out of the picture - as well at Fort Myers. I am 23 years old and I am looking for a place that is not strictly ALL "old" retired individuals. Nothing wrong with that at all as sometimes they make good golf partners. However I am single and it would be nice to see females my age and be in a place that has some nightlife to it. I am not big party guy but still to be able to have the option is always nice and gives me the opportunity to meet others my age. Any suggestions? Having looked around it seems as though my options are Venice, Englewood, Grove city - however I am not sure as I am very uneducated in this discussion however that is what is close to my current boss' house.

Any advice will help me but just please keep in mind my flexibility is limited. I would have loved Tampa - I've been down there the last three years, that and Sarasota and St. Pete ..all beautiful places and have a lot to offer - I guess I just pulled the shorter stick. So with that being said I want to make the best of this and as I said any sound advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

Rich: you might want to get a more specific location from your boss and then do the research. It's pretty hard to give you advice since your plans are not that firm, yet. Even so, younger people are probably going to be in Sarasota and Fort Myers, if that helps at all.
