Lee County School District wants minority teachers | The News-Press | news-press.com

"About 12.5 percent of the district's 5,000 teachers are black or Hispanic. Adkins said the percentage has dropped a few percentage points in the past year."We need to balance this out,"

Can't we just hire the best teachers available?

This is a new one. I'm with you, Riko. Quotas may have been fine at the advent of The Civil Rights Movement to get the ball rolling and ensure that it was working. But that ship sailed a long time ago. Quotas now declare a difference and that skin color matters, something that I absolutely abhor. Can Lee County schools ever get it right?

We've also got to find out why minority teachers are leaving our district and what we can do to keep them.

They should look into why any good teacher is leaving.

Hik, I don't care if 50% of the teachers are black or latino as long as they are the best teachers available.

If anyone knows the answer to this question feel free because I'm wondering. I've been looking at a site called collegeboard.com that has all the info u could need for every college in America. It says that about 70% of students in many schools receive scholarships and that scholarships are given, among other things, based on minority status. What does this mean? That minorities get to go to school free of tuition? OR something else.

Considering all things equal or if the base is weighted toward the minority - the person with minority status will get the money (scholarship) before a non-minority.

Well if you look at the University of Florida apparently 73% of the students get a scholarship so my question is why would you go if you weren't getting a scholarship? I'm also assuming, based on this, that just about every minority gets a scholarship?

Scholarships does not mean free tuition. Some could be 200.00, 500.00, or some could be a full ride. With scholarships, you tend to have an essay or application of some sort. There are thousands of scholarships available. Each scholarship has its own criteria. Usually the scholarship is based of someone's donation to the school or department within the college. Some could have a criterion that only Lee County students could receive the scholarship - even though you could be attending UF.

There is a reason for that and it has nothing to do with your race. Two words: Bright Futures. TN has a similar program. I know because, so far, no matter where we move our daughter is covered.

I'm surprised y'all don't know about this.

Bright Futures Scholarships
