I understand the sentiment Nancy, but following that advice could get you a visit from a friendly policeman wanting to know why you're walking up and down the street knocking on doors....or worse from one of the more paranoid residents among us. This is Cape Coral 2009, not Cape Coral 2005. Think about it............
Perhaps you can do the asking at a more public forum, like the lunch counter at Denny's.....

LOL. True. However, people still sell door-to-door (I don't) and many people are willing to let them in, but I do agree things are different these days. In April or May I looked at a house on the Cape and began chatting with some local residents who were walking their dogs. Keep in mind when I say "looking at homes" I mean without a real estate agent. Sometimes I'd drive up to a house and park, especially if it was empty. If people are still living in a house, it's rude. If I saw a neighbor looking out of a window or mowing the lawn, I'd wave and say "I apologize for the invasion of privacy, but I wanted to stop and take a peek." One woman said "we're used to it" since there were a few homes on the street with signs. Another told me about the cost of connecting the sewer. So far, nobody has called the police or even yelled at me. People on the Cape seem to be very friendly but, as I wrote before, I just don't like it, so I stopped looking for a house there. When I was looking in Golden Gate Estates, one homeowner let me use his bathroom and gave me the lowdown on the area.
Regarding a local meeting place to get lunch, if Denny's is my only choice, I definitely would move onto another town!

No, The News Press is not a rag. A rag is a tabloid. The News-Press is a garden-variety daily newspaper. It is reporting the crime that is occurring. Sorry if that messes up your agenda, but they are reporting the truth.
Further, I don't know if you would really want to broadcast your philosophy:
Cape Coral: It's better than the South Bronx.
This is the same stuff you were throwing three years ago. It didn't work then and it will never play now.

Cape Coral IS better than the South Bronx. Come on, be realistic now.
And as far as the News-Press, I believe the main reason that you like the News-Press is because they report more of the bad stuff that happens in Cape Coral. Not once since I joined this forum in November of 2007 have I seen you say one good thing about Cape Coral. You try to focus more on the negativity and the crime that you do some of the positives, which is why I could see you defending the News-Press. Cape Coral as a lot of positive traits, I just wish people could see that more. As far as I am concerned about the News-Press, it's a newspaper. All newspapers are the same: The report what they want to report, and reporting the crime instead of the good is how you get readers.

Some people try and put words in my mouth....
I was not comparing C/C to the South Bronx but just how over stated the press's opinion is.
Are there some problems,,,of course but not the way it's portayed,,every time there is an up date on an incident they repeat the whole story thus creating more controversy. and worry whic IMHO is unawarranted..but they got to sell C*** so why not print it.
Bottom line things will improve as time goes by.

Well, bless your heart. My point went flying right over your head.
Because I have some time I will spell this out for you.
If the best that you can do is say that Cape Coral is better than the South Bronx it IS a good time to stop commenting.
And no, newspapers sell ads. That's how they make their money. As "JustNancy" so intelligently explained, it is not in the best interest of The News Press to print "bad" stories as you put it. The more houses and cars and furniture that sell, the better off the newspaper is going to be. Those real estate agencies, car lots, furniture stores, restaurants, etc., close and The News Press will fold, too.
The News Press is one of the most poorly written papers that I have ever come across. But they print the crime because it happened. It is what journalists are suppose to do. The second that stops you will have Pravda.

The News-Press isnt selling much advertising these days. The economy has slammed that pretty hard. The regular "classified" section is but a mere ghost of it's former self. Last time I bought a News Press at the stand, it had gone up to $.75 for a daily. Too steep for my pocket, when I can get the news much cheaper online,(or just pick up a used one, from the guy that was sitting next to me at the Denny's counter ) and local classifieds have pretty much been taken over by Craigslist. I dont see a News Press in SW Florida's future a few more years out. I could be wrong though, maybe there's a big brother bail out waiting in the wings for newspapers........
But if they print the truth about the area, kudos to them. I suppose they could be just a shill for the local chamber of commerce like some of the other media outlets are. Or some here would like them to be..........I usually just read the reader editorials at the back of the "A" section anyway. It's pretty much like this forum, cheerleaders in one direction or the other of a particular issue....
Oh, and Nancy, I frequent the Perkins and Bob Evans also, but unless I'm willing to go "off brand" that's about all the variety that's available in the Cape.

Yachtcare! I didn't picture you to be a "chain" kind of guy. Me, I'm diner all the way.
The way things are going we are not going to have one newspaper left in this country.
In the meantime, kudos to The News Press for at least printing the news. Crime is not an opinion piece.
