NO. Lehigh is awful. It is desolate and full of people you would not want your retired in-laws near. There is a lot of crime, and Lehigh doesn't have a police system that can handle the crime there. They also aren't formed properly as a city, so there isn't a solid government there. Lehigh had a promising future a while ago, but now it is full of migrant workers that don't speak English, and there are apartment buildings full of illegal immigrants living 10 to a unit. Besides all that, there is NOTHING to do in Lehigh. They would be so bored. I live in Cape Coral, and that is a good area for retirees. It's pretty affordable right now, too, with lots to do and very family-oriented. Also, try Punta Gorda (that's a cute town) and Bonita (a little on the pricy side, but beautiful).

TRUE!!! Please don't let your loved ones move to LA... It's even worse than this poster stated.

Lehigh Acres??? I wouldn't want my dog to live there. As stated above, crime ridden with a police force the mayor has publicly stated as being undermanned.

There are serious issues that plague Lehigh ranging from excessive housing inventory, crime, infrastructure...you name the problem, it can be found in Lehigh.

There are other areas that are better if they are intent on SW FL such as Bonita Springs, Estero, & Punta Gorda; --all places that are very geared towards the retiree lifestyle. Lehigh is just a ghetto.

What about north of lehigh acres? closer to Alva & 80. what is that area like?
We are thinking about taking a job offer out of the Ft myers area. it's construction so anything within decent driving distance ( 20 min or so) of ft myers would be great, any ideas?

No Lehigh Acres, No! Look in some of the areas that pp said, Bontia is great or even Naples, the housing market is so great now for sellers you could find something that is affordable.

Default Lehigh Acres Has a Good Reputation

There is a lot of growth in that area and the cost of living is still reasonable.

Good schools and you can still end up with a decent size piece of land there so that your neighbor won't be on top of you.

Good luck!

I would hardly call the schools in Lehigh Acres good although I guess everything is relative. I spent a short time at one of the schools in Lehigh, working, and was shocked at the overall expectation that none of the kids would go to college and hardly any would be able to read! I would probably say some of the lower performing schools in Lee County.

There have been some recent news stories about Lehigh Acres, you might want to read the news online, there have been a lot of growhouses discovered, I do not know the exact amount but I want to say around 150, someone correct me if I am wrong.

Just so you know, there was an article this morning in the Ft. Myers newspaper that announced Lee County Sheriff's Dept. has created a Homicide Department -- lots of bodies found out in Lehigh Acres....there is also a website you can go to that shows you the various crime rates in Lee County -- I think you can get to it from the Sun Press website or maybe the county website....
