If I absolutely had to vacation in southwest Florida, I would go to Sanibel or Captiva.

Whatever you do, don't stay at the Lani Kai on Fort Myers Beach. Check out Trip Advisor, and read the reviews.

All the beaches I've visited in SW Florida had nice sand but Murky water... Really didn't like swimming there at all... Are they still having the problems with sewege in Sanibel?? I know the beaches were closed for a little bit...
Miami has really nice water... Green and a good part of the time crystal clear...
