I hate to say this, and some of my friends in this thread are going to be mad, but here's the deal.
First of all, having something to do, like a pool hall or a teen rec area is nice. And being in an area that caters to retirees is going to allow young people to go by the way side. Yes. Lee County is not set up for young people.
But here's the deal...
Teenagers need to study and socialize with other kids in a decent environment.
Here in Tennessee, kids have three things to keep them occupied....
School
Church
Sports
In no particular order.
Am I a holy roller? No. Anyone that knows me, knows that I have issues with organized religion.
But that is the reality. Kids of that age need to have an interest to belong to. Take ballet or karate.
The kids need to be worried about the college they will get into. Are they volunteering? That will get them into a great college.
And this is from a woman that has five kids from 29 to 7. Did I do it perfectly? No. I did it horribly.
But a town does not owe your children.
I grew up in a town up North that had the same complaint. "The kids have nothing to do."
It is up to the parents to find something for the kids to do, even if it means watching a movie together, making them mow the lawn or do homework.
No kid should be hanging out at McDonald's.
And remember. I suck as a parent. I just know the mistakes I made.

I can agree here too. But if they built things for teens to do, teens wouldn't have the excuse that they do it because they are bored. Then the real issues could be taken care of.

No problem with growth in Fort Myers. Not trying to scare anybody off. In fact, I have a condo that I would love to get rid of, but still, I am not about to mislead anyone so that I can do so.
Fact: City-Data stats reflect that Fort Myers is #17 on the list of least safest cities.

Speaking of facts and personal opinions, please cite all of your sources of "fact" so that everyone here can learn of more resources that cancel out all of the negativity they are experiencing and all of the news reports they are reading in the newspaper or hearing on the daily news with regard to Ft. Myers. Thank you!

Ft. Myers is the least populated city in Lee County next to maybe Bonita but that might be even bigger. Ft. Myers proper is a small area encompassing the area between the river and I-75 and stretching to the Colonial Blvd. area in the south. Ft Myers was the only city in Lee to make it on the list. Plus Palatka was one of the highest. What the heck is Palatka? I have never heard of crime in Palatka. Cape Coral is the third safest city in Fl with over 100,000 people (the cape website has a link to that info.). If you don't mind me asking, what part of Ft. Myers did you live? Lee County on the whole is a safe area. Ft. Myers core has crime. All cities do. The difference is that crime is located in Ft. Myers whereas in other cities it tends to be located in the subarbs. The Ft. Myers AREA is still very safe though.

I loved Fort Myers, I love Sanibel and Captiva, I would love to live there however I did wonder about the crime. The last time I was there, the news for the area was like a joke. Living near Orlando and Daytona I am used to people being killed every day...its that simple. The whole week I was in Fort Myers, I heard nothing like that...
However recently I did hear that the police found 8 dead bodies in a field they felt had been there for many years...so decomposed their clothes were gone...that gave me occasion for pause...
If we lived there my daughter wouldn't have a hard time finding something to do, snorkeling, scuba diving, jet skiing, boating...fishing, shell collecting, sun bathing...you get the general idea. I geuss it depends on what your kids want to do.

We don't even know if the bodies originated in Lee County. Lee could have just been the dumping grounds. Weird story though. I'll be interested in what they find.

I know, I thought that was SUCH an odd story...at the time the news said something about a funeral home that was known to have not buried people when they were supposed to or maybe it was a crematorium...I don't remember. BUT 8 dead bodies??? I was a little taken aback at that. The condition of the bodies seemed to say they were dumped all at the same time...how often do you hear of that happening.
I would love to hear more news on this story if anyone finds something. The criminal mind is a frightening but interesting place.

It may not seem high but just consider how many high schools there are out there. The best way to know if its the right place for you is to come down and explore it a little bit. I wouold recomend the Estero area if you do come down.

When you see Ft. myers on city data, they are talking about the city core a.k.a. the ghetto. Just go to news-press.com and look at the article printed today about last years crime. Cape Coral is still the third safest city in Florida with over 100,000 residents. Crime is up over last year but down from 5 years ago.

inftmyers - So, for a quick recap based on what you are saying here on the thread entitled "Need Information on Fort Myers", City Data is just speaking of the ghetto area of Ft. Myers, not the city in its entirety. Cape Coral is a neighboring city with very low crime; however, Cape Coral is not Ft. Myers? And Ft. Myers is in Lee County; this would be the same Lee County located in SW FL which you have stated as having housing cheaper than most other areas of Florida?
