Wow. You all make me want to give up swimming at the beach and kayaking at all in Cape Coral... It is strange because the water across the street from us is crystal clear - although to be honest, I don't think I have seen any fish...

i don't know if you can rent them there yet. the city was supposedly making improvements to that park and rentals was one of the things but if not then there are places in Matlacha or pine island.

I'm not sure about out that way, but I know you can rent kayaks by the park by the midpoint bridge.

You can rent then at Four Mile Eco Park, but only on Sat and Sun.

I wouldn't swim in any fresh water lake or canal in Florida , if you do make sure you plug up your nose to prevent bad bacteria from eating those 2 brain cells you have left Moderator cut: snip

I have cleaned this thread up but I do want to add a comment regarding swimming in lakes or fresh water canals.

There is an amoeba on the bottom of many lakes especially when the water is very warm that can kill you. It is on the lake bottom and is stirred up when people dive or swim underwater.

There have only been like 60 reported cases of this since the 1950's in the entire country. This is not a common occurrence!

Well not according to this. I lived on a lake in the 80s which is when I became aware of it. However the total is not just in the US so maybe that is the difference.

The disease is both exceptionally rare and exceptionally lethal: There had been fewer than 200 confirmed cases in recorded medical history as of 2004,[5] 300 cases as of 2008,[6] with an in-hospital case fatality rate of ~97% (3% patient survival rate)
