well, i have apparently found numerous subsidized housing areas in the fort myers area that apparently has rather high quality services for low income people like myself (which is actually not very surprising due to the long strings of dirt cheap real estate that i have been finding there). when i checked fort lauderdale, they pretty much had mostly group type homes and i would really like to live independently. anyone have any reason why i should or should not move to fort myers?

Here are some reasons not to
In my experience, the people aren't very nice there.
In my experience, I have sat in more traffic there than I do in Fort Lauderdale. This is saying a lot.
In my experience, the air for some reason is always smoky and polluted when we go there. Could just be coincidence. (Question to those in Fort Myers, is it?)
Crime rate in Fort Myers itself is sky high.
Overall Fort Myers just seems like a very strange place.
My suggestion? Don't move to Fort Myers or Fort Lauderdale. Move somewhere in north Florida.
I agree with your overall assessment, Fort Lauderdale. Fort Myers is a very strange place.
I've seen posts that said that the rudeness of people shouldn't make a difference. I'm sorry, it does. When you start avoiding going to the store because you are sick of the nastiest of strangers it affects your quality of life.
Air quality...
Well, I have to say that I thought Fort Myers air quality was very good. Much better than Knoxville, that's for sure. And better than Massachusetts, too. I loved the smell of the Florida air!
However, the red tide was horrible. When that was around I got very sick. At one point I had double pneumonia. It seemed like I almost always had a cold there.
I wouldn't even steer him away from here if it wasn't such a fiscally irresponsible move. I haven't really had any "Rude people" problems, but then again, I don't live in Fort Lauderdale itself, which to me also seems like a strange place to live...albeit in a different way than Fort Myers.Fort Lauderdale has this tendency to remind me of sex and sleaze (maybe its the 500 strip clubs and porno stores along ever major throughafare). Basically...
Fort Myers= The Twilight Zone
Fort Lauderdale= An high budget porn flick. Fun for a young professional though, and at least theres some more sophisticated culture around and just a tad less crime.

You and I are in agreement, again.
Lots of cranky old people and over-55 trailer parks. No culture, is right, unless you consider the Bob Evans early-bird-special rush and the girls gone wild at the Lani Kai on Fort Myers beach culture.
Subsidized housing in Fort Myers?
Triton1 will be in the ghetto, for sure, dealing with the drug dealers, shootings, robberies. It will be like Chicago but without a decent bus service or decent things to do.
I met lots of people like you, Triton1, in Fort Myers. People down on their luck or disabled that moved to Fort Myers hoping to just grab a little piece of paradise. Everyone of them was miserable.
Fort Myers has very little tolerance for those less fortunate. They will try to force you out every chance that they get. Pick up the phone and call these places that offer services. You will get a taste of the attitude. Did you know that Fort Myers stopped local churches from handing out food in the local park?
From the bottom of my heart: DON'T DO IT.
I've tried to warn young families, and the like, about moving there, but you, my friend, will be extremely vulnerable. Please. Think about this.
I know that you use to have another moniker on here. I told you then not to do this. I'm telling you again.
Flames and trolls on Florida, bashing it to pieces again. I had a gut feeling this was gonna happen.
You asked for reasons why not to move to Ft. Myers, and people answered you honestly. There are no flames and trolls, these posters are telling you like it is, and I'm sure they are sorry that it isn't what you want to hear. I never lived in Ft. Myers, but lived further north in Sarasota; and other than the fact that town is prettier with more culture, it has as much crime, rudeness, strangeness, etc. as the rest of SW Florida. I lived there for 17 years, and hated it. Why do you think we would lie about this stuff? There are better places in Florida to go, especially if you are down on your luck.

Look, I'm not going to lie to you,I care enough to tell posters on this forum the truth (notice my title?),and you need to know reality. I don't want you fooled into thinking otherwise, I am actually genuinely concerned for you. Yes, I happen to like living here, and I will definitely argue my point that we aren't the "worst" place by any means and overall it's not a bad place to live, but that doesn't mean I can recommend it to everyone and the area has a bright rosy future.
Fort Myers, well, I have heard nothing good about it, and the only good I have seen about it is the Edison museum.

For some reason when I think of Fort Lauderdale strange things come to mind for me as well.... maybe because of all of the weird people there Coral Ridge is nice though.... as are many parts of the city... but of course much of it is just filled with totally bizarre people.
Anyhoot, I have never been to Fort Myers, and have had no reason to do so... from what I've read though the crime rates are supposed to be above the national average.
I find it bizarre that "Triton1," who sounds exactly like "lonelychicagoan" a person who was banned on this forum, is calling us flames and trolls.
