I came here from the Detroit area(Warren) 17 years ago. No one could dispute that Detroit is bad, it was bad then, I can only imagine, but then again it's probably not much worse than Miami is now. I figure Warren has likely gotten much worse after almost two decades also. I guess when you first arrive here from an area experiencing crime to such an extreme degree, what goes on here, probably looks pretty tame. But for those of us that have been here a while, the escalating crime rate is very apparent. That is of course, assuming you havent buried your head in the sand, as some do. As far as most major crime making the news, well....of course, if there are plenty of witnesses, it's pretty difficult to bury a story. But trust me on this, in an area so dependant on TOURIST $$$$, the local chamber of commerce has a vested interest in having the local media ignore everything they possibly can. ![]() |

What has always amazed me is the people that will compare Lee County to Detroit or Baltimore, Philadelphia, etc. Well, gee, when you take your life savings and move to a "tropical paradise" I would think that you wouldn't want Detroit. However, I would think that you would be surprised at the actual amount of crime that is there, especially a couple of years ago when you were paying through the nose for real estate. Taxes and insurance did not reflect a bang for the buck. The schools are deplorable. The cops and government officials are surly. A rude and transient community only adds to the discomfort. Yet, there are a lot of people on this forum, and I have been a member for a long time, that have a vested interest in telling people that it is only oranges and sunshine. Buyer beware. |

And in the past I said "I live in a quiet area", which it really is. I take my wife to work this morning and there are 10 or so police cars around the corner surrounding a house!! NICE!!! I never see police around here and there was one at every corner, so I looked between the houses as I drove by, there was a house with cars everywhere. Grow house? Murder? Drug bust? Maybe it will be on the news, yahoo....

Wow man, Orlando, Cape Coral, and Palm Bay (well that's all I have counted). Three of Florida's worst
. I don't think Cape Coral is THAT bad but your side of the state has some really rude people. And I'm not one that complains about rude people everywhere. And the unemployment rate over there is rivaling Michigan. |

And the winning answer is....MURDER....Accused murderer Eddie Dean McNealy arrested at 166 SE 19th ave this morning, the third suspect in the murder of a 20 year old local football star in Port Charlotte, on April 5th. OK, so for those of you that have your heads in the sand, I'll be fair...The murder did not occur in Cape Coral (this time). It would appear that the murderer just resides here, in the "safe" SE section..... Apparently he thinks it's a nice place to live also ![]() ![]() ![]() Edit: sorry for the sarcasm, I didnt sniff my roses this morning ![]() Last edited by yachtcare; 04-18-2008 at 11:43 AM.. |

I will not argue with you all, but think about this , the whole country is in a recession with inflation compounding the situation, odd huh? Florida definately seems to be magnified along with cali and las vegas because of the houseing situation. For all of you thinking that rising crime and unemployment is restricted to sw florida, think again. I have said it before, think about this now,our riseing fuel oil prices are crippleing the country, and untill that gets straightened out we will have problems.

One more thing, we all tnd to stick our heads in the sand when things that go on around us. This is just the way it is , we have all the same issues here on LI but I have lived here my whole life so I dont see the crime getting worse and I feel safe. There are some people that see anything on the news and harp on it till the cows come home, they are the same ones that talk about how mildred and sam just found out they have cancer, They just harp on the negative all the time. These type people are just not happy, If they sell their homes and move anywhere they will find something to complain about. Crime has always happened and unless you knew someone in the police dept that told you what was really going on ,you had no idea and this is true everywhere. There are bad people in this world and there are stupid kids. A 10 year old rolling a tire down the street is not a bad person, sorry. Some people should wake up and see the sunrise and thank god they got to see another one, not complain about it. Every day we wake up is a good day. Take care all
