Cape Coral-- Why do so many people speak negatively about it??? (real estate, housing)

Well, it will help, but not by much. About 18,000 people are out of work in Lee County, so 500 jobs will not make much of a dent.

These are quailty jobs with more to follow and when it does happen within a few years I am gonna rub your nose right in this.

Just curious about this airport & the need for it. SWFL Intl is what, like 30 mins away at the most. What major airline has decided to fly in/out?

IMO, the airport in Fort Myers is the best part of that place & really appreciate how they take care of the long term parking situation. It's also nice that you can get a coffee or bite to eat prior to entering security so family members can stay longer, etc. It's set up well.

Just don't see the point of the airport unless it is going to be a small airport with specific flights. What's the professional demand?

There are the business parks all around SWFL Intl that have more For Lease than occupancy, though.... & of course the gluttony of new construction condos that are empty.

It's going to take a lot to get that area up & running & it is going to take a long time. People need to be able to provide for their families. That's a hard sell in SWFL right now.

Interesting. In December of 2006, you called the slowing of the housing market "this little ruffle we have" and advised to buy in six months. Of course, that's when the bottom fell out.

Now, the area has the largest amount of foreclosures in the COUNTRY and the unemployment rate in the area is the highest it's been in 15 years.

I recently moved to SW Florida (I have been here about a Month) and I don't feel it is as bad as many on here say it is. I have a job that deals the infrastructure, (water recourses, sewage, development, and road ways) my employer moved me down here to help with several projects. Now if the economy was as bad as the dooms day-ers say it is why would they pay the expense to move me? On top of that my wife was able to find a job right away. Again, if the job market was as bad as you say it is how did she find the job right after we moved? As an outsider on my way in I think things are picking up. In addition one of the main industry down here is tourism and retires. And considering how many time I've been cut off by older drivers who still have the right turn signal on, I'd say the retires are still making the trek in the winter. So your main source of revenue is still in tacked.

Now the real estate market does seem pretty bad down here but in my opinion it will hit bottom soon or it maybe at the bottom.

Now about the crime. In my opinion it is not as bad in the Cape as some on here say it is. Granted I am new to the area, but I am moving down from Detroit, so I know what bad crime is. I have lived in Detroit my whole life up till now, I've had Three cars stolen, I've been pick-pocketed, and robbed at gun point.

With a population boom there will be an increase in crime, but it seems like the police in this area are on top of things. In Detroit the police did very little in the way of solving crimes and they are very un-organized (one time I received a police report on the back of a burger king receipt). Down here it seems if a fly takes a crap on a car it is considered vandalism. For a city the size of Cape Coral the crime rating is very good.

Also if your main source of how bad it is comes from the news - consider the source. They are in business to make money, and crime sells. They won't bring in readers or viewers if they tell about the little grey haired lady who cooked a pot roast this afternoon. The crime down is so low that you most likely hear about every major crime on the news cast.

If you spend some time reading past posts & once you've lived there more than a few weeks, you will see what people are discussing.

I have been down here several times before on business, and I have family down here. I am familiar with the area. I have also been reading the posts for some time now. What I noticed is that most of the negative comments have to do with the areas job and real estate market and the crime. Also most of the negative comments seem to be posted for the sake of being negative.

So poor wages & a horrific real estate situation are posted just for the heck of it? It's not false information & more of a sad story than anything else.

It is not fair not to tell people what the reality is & there is both bad & good in that particular area. Plain & simple.

Everyone's situation is different & everyone's opinions are valid.

Well, if I moved from Detroit to Cape Coral, I'd think it was heaven, too.
