This is just one incident. It seems that almost every day there is a significant crime story coming out of Lehigh Acres. It was ground zero for the foreclosures and has become a place you really dont want to move into. Just a warning if you are looking into the area and see all those cheap homes in the Lehigh Acres area.

How apt, I was just looking at homes in Lehigh Acres. It's weird since the area and homes look so nice, that it'd be so crime ridden, apparently. Is there no area in South Florida that's inexpensive, rural and crime free. In most other areas of the country rural usually means less crime, but that seems not to be the case in South Florida.

Golden gate estates is pretty chill for the most part, and there are some good deals to be found. NW Cape Coral is inexpensive, rural (for now) and one of the lowest crime areas in the state.

I work for a transportation company, and one day I overheard a driver briefing a new driver and telling him about Lehigh Acres, calling it "The Black Hole" and advising against picking anyone up there.

Lehigh Acres is a notably bizarre place even by national standards. When I was a kid, I collected maps and was given a map of Fort Myers. What are these insanely extensive square miles of platted streets that don't seem to have many people? In 2004, I was in FL for other reasons and went out of my way to drive around Lehigh because I was fascinated by these endless mostly-empty streets. At that point, it was just streets, jungle, and nice, upscale houses. A mere few years later, I started reading about the ghetto element moving in, and that makes it even more perplexing and unusual, particularly within the same decade or so that many of the houses were built. That almost never happens. Someday I want to go back and see how it has changed. Even though I understand the market forces that caused the ghetto element to move in, I'm still at a loss for how it could happen so fast. Very highly unusual and fascinating, but most importantly it must be horribly frustrating for the poor people who bought into it before the change with no way of knowing or predicting that it would get worse...and fast.
