Hello. My family and I just purchased a home located on a private road which needs maintenance. My experience so far has been that no one cares to fork out any money to pay for the maintenance which entails laying some limestone and gravel. Could we open ourselves up to a lawsuit if we just pave the road area located directly in front of our home? Our next door neighbor indicated she wants to wait longer! Its been over 5 years I hear and the neighbors (only 5 of them) have never came to an agreement to proceed with maintenance. The rainy season is approaching and we heard that it becomes a mud lake in front of our home. Any advise is greatly appreciated!

Read the docs regarding who owns the road and who maintains it. From what you say, there is no maintenance agreement. If you are partial owner (easement across the front of the property), you can do whatever you are big enough to do. Lived on a private road, one owner would take a tractor and blade and "pull" the road ever so often. Get a load of shell, dump it and spread it.
