About the Pine Island Plan----------LINK

Pine Island is located about 10 miles west of Cape Coral, and is surrounded by Pine Island Sound
which empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The island is 17 miles long and from 1 to 4 miles wide.
It has no beaches on the Gulf. There are 4 separate communities, all un-incorporated, Bokeelia
Pineland, St. James City and Matlacha. The residents are from all walks of life, ranging from
those with less than high school education to those with several post graduated degrees.
Homes may be modest manufactured homes or upscale structures

The character of Pine Island is largely rural. Primary occupations are still commercial fishing
and service industries (restaurants, grocery stories, banks, pharmacy). There are no theaters
department stores, big box stores, public transportation facilities or traffic lights
Although there are several doctors and dentists, there is no hospital or medical testing facility
There is one school, Pine Island Elementary. Children going to middle and high school must
attend those facilities in Cape Coral or other surrounding community

Make no mistake, Pine Island is not like Marco Island or Sanibel
This is not going to be a developer's haven it's not all about you and your money
If that's what you were thinking then your on the wrong Island

"Pine Island is the very last Florida Island that is not over developed."

I don't think that's quite accurate. How can Pine Island be the LAST island in FL that is not over developed, when in the FL Keys alone, more than 1600 of those islands are totally undeveloped and totally uninhabited? (Fewer than 100 of the 1700 FL Keys are developed/inhabited).

Thanks.

exclude the Keys, it says Pine Island represents the "last frontier" in searching for the best
of the Florida gulf coast, old style Florida

THE BEST OF FLORIDA COAST - It's called Old Style Florida, it has nothing to do with the Keys.

So, it should read:

"Pine Island is the VERY LAST FLORIDA ISLAND that is not over developed.* * Excluding over 1600 of the Florida Keys, which are also islands, but we are ignoring them. We are also ignoring the Ten Thousand Islands region of southwest Florida. We are also ignoring other Gulf Coast islands such as Cayo Costa, Patricio Island, Cayo Pelau, Egmont Key, Shell Key, Whale Island, and hundreds of other undeveloped islands, both named and unnamed along the Gulf Coast of Florida.

I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I just think this effort would be more successful if it was not so darn obviously factually wrong in its claim of : "Pine Island is the VERY LAST FLORIDA ISLAND that is not over developed."
It looks like the writer of the article is either 1.) Very uniformed. or 2.) Being misleading. Neither is a good way to get their point across.

Good luck with your endeavor. I did read much of it. I remember a lot of "Old Florida" as a kid. Delicious fish shacks, fish camps, the old gator wrestling shows, tin roof houses, and lots of live oaks (aka Florida Oaks) laden with Spanish moss. Now it's condos and gated/planned communities galore with ridiculous HOA rules, and signage codes, etc. Old Florida developed in an ad hoc way, without many rules and regulations. They had big roadside signs advertising the latest "Gator show" and whatnot.

It will be a fine line you'll need to walk. The Pine Island proposal sets out lots of rules. Old Florida was developed with almost no rules. So, the line you have to walk is one where you need enough rules that it won't become a bunch of strip malls with more Mediterranean architecture, ... Yet, it can't have too many rules, or it will be the antithesis of the rule-free wild Old Florida. Too many rules and it will just be another form of a rule-laden community with condo boards, rules committees, etc. Old Florida didn't have any stinkin' rules committees or governing boards or this or that committee. Old Florida developed with barely any rules at all.

Best luck!

Cayo Costa, Patricio Island, Cayo Pelau, Egmont Key, Shell Key, Whale Island are the peaches.

Pine Island Marco Island and Sanibel are apples

You can't compare the two. It's about becoming an over developed island the next (Sanibel or Marco Island) and it's not about the 1600 undeveloped islands in the Keys or ten thousand Islands of other undeveloped islands in the region

Nothing misleading or wrong about that, I'm sure you get it, If not, then you have other interest $

My 1968 mustang is red. It isn't anything like 1968 mustangs painted other colors. You can't even compare them.

I toured the island 2 weeks ago by car. Very nice and laid back. Another reason it won't be developed like Marco Island or Sanibel is there are no gulf beaches. I didn't see any per se "beaches". Most money people looking for florida islands like to go to the beach. Yes you can take a boat to one but not a car unless you want to drive for an hour plus. So for that reason alone I don't think you have to worry about over development.

The developers would remove the mangroves haul in sand for the beaches and pay the fines $$$ later. The removing of mangroves has happened on Pine Island numerous times before.
This is America and money rules. The only reason they haven't been able to ruin the Island's beauty yet is because of this (Article), it's no accident that the Island is still very nice place because a lot of people in the past have worked very hard to protect it.

This Pine Island Plan has been in place for 30 years and now that's not good enough, now they want to rewrite it. Can you guess WHY $$ ?

My message to the Lee County BOCC, Lee County attys, et al has been and will remain DON'T DUMP the PLAN. Hundreds of other Pine Island property owners have joined me in displaying their signs and stickers. We are working hard to have our voices heard. To the BOCC and attys, I'm asking you to Defend the Plan. You are being held hostage by 8 law suits and the threat of a mere 51 more. But we number in the thousands, we vote and we will remember what you choose to do to the Pine Island Plan. We are the people and the ball is in your court. Do the right thing now or you will kill Pine Island. It won't be good.

Not over developed means it is developed but not over developed, and uninhabited island does not fit this category.
