I think there are more people in the Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach areas from the Northeast so they have more flights and it's cheaper because of that is my guess. so they can keep them as full as possible.

I love flying into RSW... And you should see the airport I fly from. It us a tiny little country airport in Latrobe PA. Waiting for the plane to pull up is like sitting in grammas basement game room looking out a sliding glass door as this huge plane parks in the backyard.

The side benefit of RSW being so large landwise is that it also serves as a wildlife/nature preserve. I don't think the airport is ever planned to expand to use the entire acreage, I can't see why it would ever be necessary. Which is great because the area is known Florida panther habitat.

Hey, I love RSW, let's keep it our secret, OK?

Wildlife preserves and airports can, at times, be a bad mix. Wild fowl or other large birds don't mix well with jet engine intakes, as Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger knows all too well with his Hudson River landing. I think RSW is one of those airports that uses trained dogs to scare off the birds. Luckily, it has worked so far.

The higher fares don't concern me. I'd rather drive 20 mins to the airport than 2 hours. You have to be at the airport at least 2 hrs before your flight..so you get to drive 2 hours and sit for 2 more hours in the airport and God forbid there's an issue on 75 you can forget making your flight.

It's true that it's cheaper to fly out of FLL than it is MIA and RSW, but it's not always about the money.

You're from Broward county so you'd say that...there's just as many from the NE here on the West Coast.

And every flight I've been on from RSW to MIA was full and had standby.

The airport cleared out a large wooded area west of the runway about 2 years ago to address the bird issues.

Completely agree. From ORD, the difference in price is not that much and certainly not worth the 2+ hour drive and all the extra time getting in and out of FLL. Being that we are in Gateway, the choice is 15 minutes to RSW each way or 2.5 hours to FLL each way. The $50 price difference is just not worth the hassle, and you probably chew it up in gas and tolls and parking anyway.

I love this airport as well. It is one of the reasons why we love going to Ft Myers Beach---the airport is so close and is so easy to get into and out of. I hope it never changes
