I'm not sure where to put this post but I'm hoping someone can answer some questions. My sister has 10 acres of land off of near Paseo in Fort Myers. I want to build a small 1 bedroom cottage for myself on a small section of her property. (She's fine with this btw). Am considering maybe a prefab or modular home or if that is not allowed I will just build.

The problem is we don't know who we call to find out if this is allowed. I am assuming it is as it is her property but who knows these days. Her house is very nice and I want to make the cottage very cute with a front porch and window boxes so it is not some kind of eyesore. I'm thinking 600-800 square feet. There are few houses on her street as it is down a partly paved road.

Do I call a contractor first or someone at the city of Fort Myers to get the rules?

you 100% just call the city. If you are worried about what they will do just give your zoning code. (found on your cities website zoning map, or on your "parcel data" your parcel number can be found on the tax site, and many other local tools...

Your city will confirm all the rules, most likely you will need to conform to some stuff you don't like , but that is the price of living in a nice and safe area.. (ie not allowing your neighbor to have a pig farm or store radioactive waste...)

You can put your sisters name in the search on the Lee County Property Line website. That will give you the zoning and all information you need to bring to the Building Dept.
