I will start off by saying ft,myers is a beautiful place, the beaches are great, and the women are magnificent. However...i would not feel just with a lot of my friends by saying that it is a culturally excepted area. It is dominated by northern folk who decide to move down and spend their last breath in. I am writing this for the very simple fact that i am white and feel that if i were african american or hispanic my word would mean less. Ft, myers is extremely poor including its surrounding areas, which is beyond its "58,000" who live in it. Anyone from the city line knows it doesn't mean anything because there is another 400,000 who live miles from outside it. It has major murder problems and police inabilities that need to be solved. I only hope that from this something will be done. I've listened to some of my best friends since we were 8 tell me about family members being murdered. I hope and pray for their well being that someone will actually do something about it... it is whats deserved

Most of them if not all are from Miami. Been watching them bust grow houses for years.

I have lived here 4 years and am in my late 20s. I bought a home with my husband in 2003 and we both moved here without 'careers' and are both successful. I make $50k base + bonus, around a total of $75k/year. He makes $60k but works for a tug boat company out of the area. I work for a local company and have not ever experienced this low salary that everyone talks of on this website. I interviewed several places and had great offers considering I was just out of college and was bartending at the time. Our neighboorhood in Cape Coral only has one couple over 60 on the street and is a range of 20-50's. Ft. Myers Beach is a 1/2 hour away and Sanibel is about 45 minutes. We go out boating almost every weekend and have found plenty to do here. A 3/2 house next to me is rented out for $900/month and is brand new and very nice so it is affordable.

Your salary expectations are not unrealistic. You have experience. You can find a place to rent under $1000/month as well. Look downtown Fort Myers. I've been checking out apartments in that area for the last couple of days and I continually find places that are pretty cute for $500-$700/month (one bedroom). However, be careful of when they say downtown. Some of the places are technically downtown but not in the good part. Where is this architecture firm located?
I suggest downtown Fort Myers since you mentioned you are a 20-something professional who is looking to make friends. The only really big drawback is when they have events downtown, like bike night or a block party, it gets REALLY loud. However, the events are generally held on the weekend. |
