Default Sanibel Island - where to stay?

I had asked earlier about some suggestions of places to visit and someone mentioned Sanibel Island. After checking the place out online, I want to go there!! There are so many places to choose from for lodging... does anyone have any suggestions? I would love to stay in one of the cottages but I'm open for suggestions if someone has a better idea. It's hard to get a good idea of what the places are really like when you have to judge them from a website!

Thanks in advance!

WE LOVE Sanibel and go there every year! We used to stay at Mitchell's sandcastles but it has gone downhill fast and is not only a dump, but unsafe!! That being said, it depends on what you want. the Best Western has clean kitchenettes and it's oceanfront. We are staying at the Signal Inn this summer (we go every year)--it's not really an Inn as much as a collection of privately owned 1,2,3 and 4 bedroom units. It's ideal for us--a large family group that goes every year and snags many of the units.

There are a bunch of wonderful little places. I suggest you try the
Superior Small Lodging website; I totally trust them and have been to visit most of the places there!

Pointe Santo is the best place ive been---very tropical and lush with a mote going around the clubhouse with an island and live aligators that sun themselves on the banks---close enough to touch
Located on the Gulf.

What about staying out at South Seas on Captiva? I have a couple of friends who work out there and they say it's really nice. Expensive, but nice.

Last July we stayed at South Seas and it's very nice there. We were in one of the condo's on the gulf side. The only drawback we experienced was most of the activities we did were on Sanibel so it was a little drive to get to them. We are going back in June and staying on Sanibel at Pointe Santo. We have fallen in love with this area which is why we are going back there.
