I would call the county emergency hotline, they will find her a place as long as she is willing to go and before the storm hits. Time has nearly run out.

Germain Arena is in the surge. We are in Gateway (watching this from up north) and hopefully our house in Gateway is safe from the surge, but the latest map has the surge going all the way east along Daniels to Fiddlesticks now. It was nowhere near that far east early this morning. In Naples and now North Naples, not good, even east of 75. Cape Coral went from a prediction of some small flooding last night to almost completely under water now. Marco could be entirely under water. This is biblical. This is frightening.

But some of the storm paths have us in or very close to the eye so while we might not flood, who cares if our house is a pile of rubble. I am really hoping Irma goes out further into the gulf. Like 40-50 miles out. A lot of my neighbors are riding it out. I really hope they stay safe.
Looking at the map before Irma turned north and started her motion was not indicative of what things would be like if she was closer
Rain, tides, her speed and for e of water she is pushing, even the slope of o ean floor in each area--are all factors that need their role calculated
The surge map updates when NWS updates its info for a storm
And so the display can change every update

They've been opening up new shelters as they fill up, and I see these are being extensively announced on the local news networks. Time's getting short, though, so I hope your friend did get out.

She has been depressed ever since my father passed away two and a half years ago, but why would anyone choose "suicide by hurricane"?? She'll probably drown in the dark as her house fills up with water and/or breaks down from the force of the winds. I'm so angry with her for being so careless with her safety!!!
Has she reconsidered and found safe shelter? There will most likely be very substantial and life threatening winds and flooding in the next 12 hours. Hope she is doing good.

Objective Detective, thanks for your concern. She wanted to leave earlier today, but by then it was unsafe for her to be driving. This is why she should have listened to me and left yesterday at the latest! It looks like the eyewall will be right on top of her. I agree about the life threatening storm surge. I tried to paint this scenario for her yesterday, and she just refused to listen.

I don't know how bad the surge was, but my stepmom is fine. *phew* I'm feeling very relieved now!
