Three Oaks area
We're looking to move to the Ft Myers area this summer and have a daughter who will be9. We like Estero, but don't really care for the bundled/gated communities. We heard Three Oaks is older but a nice area. Any comments/feedback?

I really like the Three Oaks area. It depends on what you mean by older. The houses are not brand new, but they are not really that old, either. They are well-built and there is a wonderful sense of community.
My mother-in-law lives on the edge of the community. We always took our little one trick-or-treating there. Everyone went all out with decorating. It was like an enormous block party.
Three Oaks is my favorite community in Lee County, hands down.

When we moved here, Three Oaks was our first draw because, like you, we had a hard time seeing ourselves in a gated community. However, we live in Bella Terra now and it is turning out to be a good place to live. It doesn't feel very gated like other communities and I do appreciate that I feel better about our home because it is newer and more likely to handle the weather. (I'll admit, however, that I do find the homeowners association to be rigorously controlling but I can deal with it because of the advantages to the community.) Our kids and my husband both play with soccer leagues in the fields at Three Oaks, which I like.

As much as I would never wish to raise my family in the Fort Myers area, we had a close friend who lived there with his family & we go for bbq; swimming, etc. We met their neighbors who were very down to earth & normal, everyday folk. It's definitely one of the nicer areas & actually has a family feel to it.
