Default Question: Port Charlotte Area

I'm thinking of moving to the Pt. Charlotte area, and am looking into Subsidized Senior Housing. During a Google search, three complexes popped up, all in Pt. Charlotte -- Villa San Carlos I and II -- one on EASY STREET; the other on VICK STREET. And, the Charlotte Towers on AARON STREET. My question: How safe are these areas for a single, retired female? Would appreciate any insight from anyone who's familiar with these areas. Thanks.

The area is ok. Things happen everywhere. Pt. Charlotte just needs to get with the times.
Like I said the area is OK.. You really need to come and look for yourself before buying.
There are alot of nicer areas in SW Florida that have affordable housing.

Well put Memoriesbre.

PC is "ok". It needs a major facelift & has some very shady areas.

There are far nicer & just as affordable places along the gulf coast & SWFL.

There is a senior community on Gasparilla Pines Blvd that goes by your income in Englewood. I know there was a waiting list a couple of years ago. Also, in Rotonda, there is a senior apt complex that is income subsidized (I think?) called Rotonda Lakes.

This area is west of Port Charlotte.

Default Thanks all; looking for specifics

Thanks all for your thoughtful replies. I'm looking to rent, not buy, from a HUD-subsidized senior apartment complex only in Port Charlotte (not really interested in other areas.) I have found three such complexes in Port Charlotte and am only looking for specific info about the safety of the streets/areas where they are located: EASY Street, VICK Street, and AARON Street. Also, if anyone knows of any other HUD-subsidized rentals for seniors (independent living, not assisted living) in a safe area in Port Charlotte, I'd be interested in those, too. Many thanks!

Post Well...

They are all very old (the structures) and somewhat run-down. That part of Port Charlotte (they're all fairly close together) is close to the hospitals and doctors offices (presumably for easy walking distance for the people living there), so the streets are busy and loud.

I would look just to the north in Sarasota County. I don't know if Willow Creek is HUD or not, but it's worth a look-see. A much quieter street and yet close to Publix, the YMCA, not too far from the library. I'm sure there is something in Venice, too. Keep looking!

If you're set on Port Charlotte, among those three choices, based on location, I would suggest the one on Aarron Street.

Easy Street would be out simply because it's one of the oldest areas of town, with troubled neighborhoods surrounding the area.

Vick Street would be out because, although a nice location with some commercial stuff nearby (shopping center with a supermarket, drug store, fast food restaurants), it's isolated from all the major medical facilities and other than one other 50-and-older complex neaby, it's pretty much in the middle of single family home neighborhoods.

I'd choose the Aaron Street one due to the fact that it is in a commercially developed area, near 2 hospitals, and because it has many senior citizen apartment/condo complexes in that area, probably similar to the one that you're considering there.

Default Perfect!

Just the kind of info I was looking for! Thanks all! I have been insistent on Port Charlotte (or some place very close) because I have family in Port Charlotte. I wanted to get independent impressions from others because my family's wish to have me there might color their judgment a bit. I will also ask for their impressions, of course -- but wanted to be armed with unbiased opinions from non-relatives. Thanks, again!
