Milabs- thanks for the reality check. Do people think they can just move anywhere in the US and make a decent living? Hard to believe.

It is becoming a problem in several areas, the biggest is Boca Grande, which is not that far from there. Sanibel, Matlacha/Pine Island, Cape Coral, and Marco all have them. Do not think they are that bad in most places yet. They have begun to trap them, from what I have heard. There are also Gators, snakes, and wild hogs running around. Sometimes a bear or cougar. The more we build, the less places for the animals to live!

The City of Cape Coral just voted ! Chris Berardi replaces Mickey Rosado, who was suspended Jan. 30 by the governor after being charged with a felont by the State Attorney’s Office. Rosado is charged with operating as a broker without a real estate license. Well the good news is this won't happen again the city voted 6-1 to select Berardi a real estate agent with a license. The best thing about the city of Cape Coral is you can't make up stuff like this for late night TV on your own. Clowntown USA.

Default good luck

We moved the heck out of Cape Coral before it turns into Miami. Many Hispanis are moving there now and we could not take going to the store and not one cashier could answer a simple question regarding a sale on an item!! If you are that young, truly think about it! I would never move back there. I am 42 with a 4 year old daugher and a great husband and raising a child there or having a teen ager living there-no way-lots of drugs and gangs there now!

Most of the drugs are from the so called good areas, Old people die and the house ends up in the hands of the kids.

like kate, we are considering cape coral. However, we are 40 with a 13 yr. old, and a 15 yr old. It does not sound boring, but i wonder if ft myers has younger neighborhoods? Also, is ft myers itself pretty nice to live in? I guess that depends where you are. I'm basically looking for fun, younger people, and not living in a run down part of a city. We are from illinois and I have never been to south florida, just orlando! What is lehigh acres and how far is it?

Well, much has changed since this post first came along in early '07.
Not that the particulars are actually anyone's business, but my first question would be, why are you looking here? Lee County has the highest incidence of home foreclosure in the state, and one of, if not the highest unemployment rates, at or near 10%, in the state also. IF you do not have employment lined up, before getting here, I'd say your chances of finding work with a living wage may be none, to slim, at best.
From practical experience, regarding children in that age range..I have a good friend, kids age 16/18. Well behaved, great kids...until, getting into the high schools here. The schools here seem to be a breeding ground for delinquents. Certainly not every student here fits that category, but the wrong peer element seems to be very abundant to lead good kids astray. Probably the case anywhere however, but so you know, this area is no exception.
Recently, the Sheriffs department released crime stats for the county. Crime is down, county wide, with the exception of Lehigh Acres, where it is up. Draw your own conclusions.......
My theory is, that crime is down, simply because so many have moved out of the county....even the criminals are seeking greener pastures. Definatly an area undergoing an exodus right now. IF you do not have employment, already secured, I would consider very carefully, any decision to relocate here. Just my .02

To start with, one reason to buy in Cape Coral is certianly the cost of the home. I was there last week looking at homes and most can be bought for about the cost of the bulding material. But dont pay the asking price. Look at the county appraisers web site and make an offer for about half the appraised value MINUS any damages you see to the home during your inspection. The nice thing is it was almost impossible to find a home more than 15 years old. It just looks like the entire city was built in the last few years.

Ok, you will hear good and bad to your question. Go online and compare humidity statistics, it was the same here as in Ohio over the summer so take those posts with a grain of salt. Being young, new, and jobless in a new city will be hard, especially if you do not have a trade to fall back on. What do you do for a living? Weather is great and the atmosphere is fun, especially around Fort Myers Beach. You may be able to find an apartment for cheap, and may be able to find a job in retail, foodservice, or hospitality if you do not have a trade. Competition is great for jobs now, so come with some money to get you set up.
