I think you will be fine in Cape Coral. You just need to pick the right area to stay for you. Not sure if you just plan to rent a room or something bigger? If you go to far out in the NW and NE area, it's kind of gost town. If you go to deep into SW it's more older people.
In your age I would try to get something in SW just a block of from Cape Coral Blvd. There is also a few fancy places to go out. I do not know anybody with problems finding a job. Well, no need to mention the Sunshine weather... it's a fan place to be outdoors, making friends with boats... beeing on the beaches, on the water or going on a ride with a motorcycle, just t-shirt and shorts, straigt to the beach... I just wished that I moved here years earlier than I did.

I hear the community is not bad, but the job market will be. Specially if you are un-skilled with no job exp.
The weather is super humid, bvut less humid than Orlando. Still, get ready for bad hair days and lots of sweating (you and I are used to dry weather, it will be quite hot here).
Forget about buying a house there, you will never be able to afford home owner's insurance, unless you win the FL Lottery!

Cape Coral
Hi Kate - I'm Wendy - I was born and raised in Naples which is about 20 minutes South of the Cape. I can tell you that the Cape is a nice place to live. However expensive and depending on what type of work you do the pay scale isn't the best compared to the cost of living. Also to go to town you have to cross a bridge with a toll. I'm not talking you out of your move because it is a nice place. I just wanted you to know some information up front. Keep me posted ! I have a 16 year old daughter. Maybe you can get together.

I assume you don't have an established career, seeing that you're only 17. It will be difficult to find a job that will pay you a liveable wage. Cape Coral is expensive, just like every place in south Florida, so be prepared to be strapped for cash if you don't have some support.
Unless you're a retiree, I would suggest you find another state. The demographic is changing. People between the ages of 20 and 40 are leaving. Retirees are still coming, in droves, as are illegal immigrants. Do you plan to enter the healthcare industry? Se habla espagnol?

Southeast Cape Coral is not a bad area. There really isn't much crime in Southeast, but that is not true for all of Cape Coral. Choose your area wisely, but All-in-All, the Cape is not a bad city.

My vote is "no." Look at the Tampa area instead. Good Luck!
