Hello everyone. We're finally getting settled in south Ft. Myers and need to decide on an internet provider. We don't need a land line, cell phones take care of the phone calls.

The two providing service are... Embarq & Comcast.

Any recommendations between the two?
I know Embarq bundles with a land line, but they should offer a dry dsl line. If they don't, we'll go with comcast (don't need to pay for something we won't use)

Any input is appreciated!

Comcast by far. EmbarQ nails you with fees, taxes, etc. I went both routes and Comcast was a lot cheaper. My embarQ bill was $76, where with Comcast it was $99 for digital cable, phone and high speed. Also the high speed of Comcast is a LOT faster than DSL.

That is my 2 cents.

Agreed, just go with the comcast. Better(not perfect) service than Embarq, the cable is far, far faster than the dsl. I have found price to be so close, as to not really be a factor, but more along your philosophy, what do you need? Land line phone, or cable TV service?

Comcast.

We had lots of issues when we started service with Embarq & ended service with Embarq. Reception, etc was never a problem. It was that their act was not together & took 3-4 phone calls to resolve billing problems caused by "computer error"...not just one billing error, but 4.

Then again, I'd take dealing with the phone calls if they offered the cheapest service.

Cash is tight in this world right now. Make them compete for your business & get on or the other to offer the lowest price.

We just moved here 3 weeks ago and have Comcast. We are very pleased with high speed internet. Previously we had DSL and Comcast is way better.

I would go Comcast. A family member of mine that lives in Cape Coral previously had Embarq and had so much trouble with the internet working and not working, and than working again, she gave it up and went to Comcast. She is very pleased with it.

Comcast-

We have Comcast in MD, and will likely stay with them as our provider in Florida. I like the high speed access, and good television package. We have things set up in our house right now for wireless interent, and we will probably have the same set up once we get settled in in PGI. I appreciate all your input and good topics.

Myself- I'd go with Embarq, and therefore think you made a good decision. I lived Port Charlotte for a year from '06-'07 and in that years time, I had no problems at all with DSL from Sprint, then Embarq after they took over.

As far as cost- they are basically the same. Comcast appears cheaper on the outset, with the bundle deal they offer for the first 12 months. Those that are paying 100 bucks for all 3 though will be paying about 150 bucks/month after that first 12 months is up.

As for speed- that's based on what speed you pay for, as there are options. Many people think they have a slow internet connection from their provider, when in fact the problem is that their PC's operating system is outdated, or their PC is near it's max storage capacity and simply bogged down. All things being equal, DSL from the phone company is faster, and it's fast all day and night long, even if everyone else in the neighborhood is online.

Being in Florida, another important consideration is outages that are a result of hurricanes. When Hurricane Charley hit Charlotte County in '04, my parents cable tv/internet service at their home was out for nearly 2 weeks. At my Dad's office, where he had DSL through the phone company, he had internet service restored within a day or two, long before he had electricity restored, and was able to reopen and conduct business as usual with his business' computer system being powered by portable generators.

I have Embarq and DirectTV because the only option in extreme north Cape Coral. Comcast was not wired here yet. Between the two bills I pay $150-$160 per month. I would rather be on Comcast, but I will say I have not had service issues either. It is just a matter of cost.
