Most of the people complaining are originally from up North. You are not telling them something that they don't already know. The problem is that you have not lived in southwest Florida. When you've lived in both places for awhile you will understand.
And I just had to laugh at the "land of the freeloaders" comment. Wait until you move to the land of the "most wanted." It felt like every escapee, con artist, scam company was in Florida, and unfortunately, that is not far from the truth.

Hiknapster, We have our fair share of flim flam artists as well. The thing about that is, its up to you, freedom of choice whether or not you want to fall for a scam. Here the government is MAKING us pay for the scams! The child care scams. Groups of women get together with their fatherless children. They do not have jobs. There is a W2 law here in Wisconsin. They are required to work somewhere. They get government paid child care while they WORK! However...they WORK at a child care. They take care of each others children and get paid to do so....AND they deal drugs out of the back...AND they falsify records to get more government money...I LOVE IT HERE!!!! Like I said...they come from miles around!!!! Wisconsin...the full tax state for the middle class. And someone was saying how CC is a communist area...all kinds of rules and regulations. We have EVERY SINGLE one of the rules listed, garage door down at night, garbage off the curb time limits, grass cutting ordinances, SNOW shoveling ordinances, and yada yada yada. CC is going to feel like a piece of heaven to us!!!!

If there are truly that many slimeballs in Wisconsin, why would you want to move to an area that has just as many creeps?
I've lived in Mass., and of course I'm now in Knoxville. I've never seen so many flim-flam artists, criminals, and yes, career welfare recipients.
Do you know that when the cops stop someone in Florida they ask for the driver's license of everyone in the car? That's because the odds are good that there is going to be someone that is wanted.
Like I said, we'll see after you've been there AWHILE.

Lol
Why would I want to move to a place that has just as many slimeballs???
Well, let me count the reasons:
1. WARM WEATHER!!!
2. More affordable housing.
3. Less taxation on property and retirement benefits (I have an 1800 square foot house, built in 1979....taxes are over 4,000!!!)
4. Lower cost of living (especially HEATING Bills!) due to less cost of gas (due to Wisconsin's great extra gas tax that is passed along to the consumer of course).
5. The ability to walk as far as the mailbox without freezing 10 months out of the year.
6. Closer proximity to the ocean instead of dirty slimey northern lakes!
7. Closer proximity to Disney World and Universal Studios, so we can drive instead of fly.
8. Closer proximity to the keys, somewhere I have always wanted to visit.
9. The possibility of an inground pool which I love more than life itself! It does not pay to have a pool in Wisconsin, the upkeep costs and effort isn't worth its being open three weeks a year.
10. Palm trees! I love them!
11. The little lizards, I love them!
and on and on and on.....
There are scam artists and people abusing the system everywhere..not just in cape coral. I'll bet there are even some in Knoxville.

Very depressed area and nothing really to do. Honestly, I would not recommend Cape Coral to anyone and Ft. Myers is even worse! Sorry, but I have to be honest!

Although I've written a few times that it's not my favorite city, "nothing to do" is all relative. Depends what you do!
Seriously, in defense of Cape Coral and Fort Myers, some people are very active in their churches or synagogues and keep busy between work, kids and community activities. Others enjoy boating, fishing, golfing, tennis or going to the gym. But, yes, it's certainly not a party town.

I don't understand the negative comments about the Cape, certainly not NYC or LA, a nice residential area with plenty of family events, nice shopping places and restaurants. The economy has hit the area but the majority of homes I see are well kept, people friendly. I have no problem staying alone in my home if hubby has to go up to the cold north. The job market for sure has taken a hit, my landscaper and pool man are doing quite well as a matter of fact. Guess life is what you make of it.
Nice to see flowers and plants blooming especially during the cold winters times of North. Just my opinion.
