Currently living in FM/Gateway development. Husband retiring - looking to move to a more active adult community. Magnolia Landing in North Fort Myers has some great homes - golf course and club house....exactly the kind of life style we are looking for, but a little concerned about the surrounding area. Does any one have any info...or opinions. It looked a little run down and not much to offer in the way of shopping etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Don't want to make a bad choice this late in life. Thanks,

Those communities are pretty far north and really removed a little bit North Fort Myers, IMO. They are nice developments, but they are largely islands... You have a new Publix, a driving range, and a few other little places and that's it. If you're looking for social activities, there wouldn't be much outside the gates of the development. Also, you'd have to drive a ways into the cape to find decent restaurants (i.e. an Outback).

Only downer I guess is that the nearest "shopping" (i.e. Wal Mart, etc. ) is North Ft. Myers. I lived in one of the nicer little enclaves of N. Ft. Myers for about 7 years and we never felt in danger or anything. Just some eyesore things like really redneck pickup trucks etc. (It's definitely not the prettiest side of town). We just tried to combine our shopping with trips into town, and since 75 is fairly close, shooting into FTM was pretty easy.

Even though you would be pretty close to Suncoast Estates on the map, I don't think a whole lot of external crime comes out of there - in my experience with the area they tend to keep to themselves. If there's crime, they usually steal from ONE ANOTHER and not from the surrounding (good) neighborhoods.

We never had any trouble in 7 years at least, and that was living right across from the problem areas.

Still, if you had the option I would look elsewhere. That Gateway/Daniels corridor is one of the nicest in Fort Myers, and it would be a bit of an "adjustment".

Just my experience/opinion though.

Hi, Joybob. We moved just "down the road" from Magnolia Landing a year and a half ago. We're in Pine Lakes, which is a step or two down from Magnolia Landing.

IMO, we enjoy the camaraderie of a small gated community. Magnolia Landing has a beautiful clubhouse w/bar and restaurant. We've been there a couple of times for dinner. elliswyatt is correct, there's not a whole lot in the area for shopping, altho Bealls just put in a new store next to Home Depot. We drive into Ft. Myers and Cape Coral quite frequently for shopping, etc. It's not difficult getting around.

We like being "out in the boonies" so to speak. We are pretty well isolated from most of the crime that occurs in the area. Having said that, however, we just went thru a wave of thefts that occured at our community as well as Heron's Glen. People in our place tend to open their garage doors and leave them like that thru the day and leaving their cars unlocked. We had kids coming in from a neighboring RV community who were taking garage door openers and getting into the houses or just knocking on the door and, if no one answered, walked in and took what they wanted. The owners are changing security methods to solve the problem. I'm not sure about Heron's Glen. I know one of the "perps" got caught by a resident he'd been trying to burgle!

Anyhow, best of luck. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.
